He's trying to change the subject and make it as if the discourse was about how people aren't going to abandon their PS5s for one hit or even a few. Obviously. I'm not going to abandon my PS5 or Switch after decades of Sony and Nintendo reliably releasing bangers because Xbox got it together for a stretch of a few games. That's not the point, and it ignores how Xbox did lose customers after the introduction of digital networks from 360 to Xbox One. Building brand loyalty is no...

"But he didn't say that."

No duh. That's the implication of "he all but said." You're just arguing to argue at this point.

"Nor did he imply it."

I can't help you here. This is one of those skills that can't be taught. I referred to you as an example of what people were saying versus Phil's characterization in hopes that it would help you to understand. ...

This is the danger when it comes to Phil's conveniently timed slices of truth.

"Whether or not that's even true, that was before people built their digital libraries on PS4/XBO."

This is true and reflective of what Phil was saying, which was also true. But only a slice of the truth. The seventh gen is when online networks became the standard for consoles and when people started building digital libraries. He...

"Agreed, I would have asked 'So Phil is it 30 or 60 and does it have performance and resolution options at launch on console if you want the messenging to be ok'"

You're referring to an ancient journalism secret called asking follow-up questions. This is a technique that was often utilized during interviews by media figures who prioritized truth and honesty over maintaining access. That set and the hoodie worn by Mike Howard for the interview says it a...

"Though I can understand why someone might take it that way."

The reason why it's understandable for someone to take it that way is because that's where Phil decided to take it in responding to sentiments from people like you saying they should focus on putting out good games. Phil decided to make it about whether or not someone would switch camps to Xbox. The implication is clear and plays into what many critics have been saying. Gaming is nothing more th...

"Credit must be given to Howard and his Xcast co-hosts as they did not shy away from the tough questions..."

Yes they did. They were there to provide Phil a safe and controlled space to respond to questions that had to be addressed, pitched to him by fanboys whose roles were to praise him for his answers rather than challenge them and continue to question when warranted.

Case in point. That question about whether players can expect a clear mess...

LMAO. You again? You never learn. Never! Your guy just got done waving the white flag and pushing back on the idea they should focus on releasing great games, because 'we'll always be third anyway.' Yet, here you are to talk trash like word didn't reach the front lines that you lost the war. And you do it every time. You talk trash, get embarrassed, and back up later to restart the cycle as if nothing happened.

Edit: One other thing. Where are those people ...

Xbox: We recognize we have a spotty history with our releases, and we're so far behind Nintendo and Sony in the console market that we've completely given up on competing. Nevertheless, we want to comment on and influence what our (not) competitors are doing in the console market, buy big 3rd party publishers, and otherwise make moves that threaten to shake the foundation of the market we're not competing in.

I can't understand being an Xbox fan whose reaction to Phil's comments is to try to somehow find a way to flip it on the people here to yet again defend Phil and Xbox.

His words aren't wrong. It's his attitude and everything he's neglected to do that led to this woe is me moment that are wrong. Recognizing the enormity of the hole they dug for themselves is not a form of vindication. There may not be many people selling their Playstations if Starfield is...

My, my. What a difference a few days makes.

It's supposed to be an escape, not another battlefield? Weren't you just attacking Sony fans on this site the other day?

Headline is accurate. That's the only problem he specifically mentioned and the only one he said they have a timeline to fix. The other problems he generalized as he low-key threw the dev team under the bus.

The amount of times it has happened makes it seem easy.

"How does how do they go from needing acti to COMPETE, to evolving. If xbox truly wasn't competing then why don't they stay in their lane like say Nintendo."

Because they won't win by staying in their lane either. They can't win by getting people to buy hardware. They want to either kill off that market or disrupt it enough that the market leaders are forced to survive by allowing Game Pass on their systems, allowing MS ...

He didn't "just" say they aren't in the business of out-consoling them. He followed that with remarks that add further context.

"There isn’t really a great solution or win for us […] the truth of the matter is when you’re third place in the console marketplace, and the top two players are as strong as they are […] our vision is that everybody who has a console has to feel like they have a great experience and a first-class citizen,”

It's an admission that they lost the 'console war':

"Additionally, Spencer says just building 'great games' isn’t a direct solution to the commentary around Xbox’s reputation alongside its peers: 'We lost the worst generation to lose, in the Xbox One generation, when everybody built their digital library of games […] everybody who walks into a retailer to buy a console are already a member of one of three ecosystems. Their digital library is the...

That's an excellent question. People who were critical of PS charging $70 tried to defend or downplay Xbox doing the same because PS did it first. If that's the defense, they should be releasing $70 games on par with Playstation, and those people need to be howling when they release something like Redfall instead.

I wasn't going to say anything even after reading thesoftware's OP initially and having some thoughts, but since the conversation has touched upon something relevant to me, I'll say this one thing as tactfully as i can.

Nothing said by Sony fans on this site can give thesoftware the disappointing experience described in the OP, so it would be best to redirect that scrutiny to the company that provided that experience instead of trying to gain neutrality points a...

A flop is based on performance versus the expectations of the producers of a product. The example I typically point to is movies. A movie with a big budget can make hundreds of millions and flop, whereas Evil Dead Rise is a hit at $88.1 million against a $19 million budget. I mentioned budget there, but budget won't always be as much of a consideration as it tends to be with movies. Loss leader products aren't expected to recoup their cost of production. That said, it's probably s...
