Sony vs Micro$oft.

Unfortunately we have a lot of ignorant fanboys - who are overwhelmingly xbots - who primarily judge a consoles merits based upon the games on and exclusive to it. All games should be multiplatform then we would see which console is truly better.

But Micro$oft is in the picture now. As a Linux and OSS supporter, we know the monopolistic practises M$ uses to secure its Winblow$ on PCs. Try buying a PC without Winblow$ installed. It's not free, ...

...to lessen the impact of the loss of rumble they focussed on the 6 axis as next gen which it is - even though it had been done by 3p controllers on PS2. They are forgiven. Now give us those damn 6axis, dual shock controllers!

"...Tomorrow people will want to install OS in their cell phones"

Done already. And not a bad job indeed. Mac OsX(which is like Linux being unix-based) is the OS on the coming Apple iPone. Take a look:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=...

Just imagine if by some miracle Sony reached an agreement with Apple to port OsX to the Ps3. Wow. My Ps3....a killer PC console - no need to buy a P...

Windows emulation on Linux just isn't a practical option.

Check this out:

Especially 1:13

Slow! That's an understatement...two operating systems running here, with little ram and no access to RSX.

Forget about it! Just stick with Linux or hope Sony will open up the RSX for Linux for 3D. Better still, petition Sony to develop...

One of the better articles I'v seen for a while.

Pricing, library quality, net service.

I'm a Ps3-Linux fanboy and even I know the Xbox 360 has an obvious lead. It's a very capable machine with great titles but it did get a year headstart without any next gen competition. But the article clearly sees that things are going to change once Wii & PS3 catch up on price, library, net - more so the Ps3.

As for the PC, they got that right too. You're t...

We have a competitive market here with picky buyers.
Pricing, market position and value for money are key focii for any business who wishes to come out on top.

* Yes - Blu-ray will be the next DVD format(Size really does matter with HD). But it is not necessary as yet, especially when games like Gears, Lost Planet and others have and are coming out on the older DVD technology. Blu-ray should have been an optional upgrade. It would've only taken two years before it would ...

Sony's revenue stream with consoles(games) must not be threatened by unlicenced games development on RSX-enabled Linux PS3.

I'm hoping Sony is developing it's own sleek, fast, optimized distribution of Linux for its PS3 - Sony Linux OS or Sony OsL. It'll be free and preinstalled on the console but commercial games developers would have to pay royalties/licences.

!!! NOW THIS IS A PARTITION WORTH BACKING !!!

Current Linux distros wouldn't come clos...

Have a DVD r/w instead of Blu-ray would have set Ps3 aside from xbox 360...plus with Sony Linux OS already installed then for $400 you get a gaming console AND a PC.

This is what Sony should have done....and this is what Sony will do over the next 5 years.

HDDs can be readily expanded by buyers themselves...if they bother to learn.

Yeah. Let's wait and see instead of passing judgement already.

Ps3 won't dominate like the Ps2 did because it has serious competition in the Wii & x360. But sales will increase and Sony will catch up once the price drops significantly, when there's a larger a better library of games and when PSN offers as much, if not better, service than XBL. PS2 buyers will eventually migrant to the Ps3.

I reckon your percentage shares wouldn't be too far off.

Yup. Sony messed up big time(late release, weak release titles, inclusion of BD, pricing, loss of dual shock, loss of exclusives, inadequate and unproven net service, developer unfriendly core design, lack of investment in or the finding of killer titles to counter Halo, Forza, Gears, Lost Planet, etc, not preloading it's own optimized version of Linux).

Had Sony NOT done all these, things would be complet...

Agreed the wii will fill a niche - it's not going away unless the next gens develop similar games and controllers.

Although I'm confident Ps3 will eventually win the war, it's unlikely it'll reach 100m sales mark. The main reason is that the PS2 didn't get much competition from the xbox. However, the x360's a more worthy opponent with an impressive selection of games and net service.

Yes, the 360's doing well at the moment but it's far too early to rule out Sony....

Ps3 has only been on the market for 6 months - projected lifespan, at least five years. Only idiots - you know who you r xbots - would say Ps3 is a failure so soon especially when over 3 million units have been sold already against cheaper consoles. Not bad in my books. But let's wait five years.

The killer titles have not been released yet, so shut up on the current library size and quality. Most games on the x360 will also be on Ps3. Have you asked yourself why developers wou...

We need to be more vocal in forums for Sony to develop it's own Linux distribution and to market the PC Console idea more.

It's obvious that in buying a Ps3 you are not just getting a gaming console. You are in fact getting a relatively powerful PC that can have the equivalent of

* Windows XP (Linux OS)
* IE (Firefox)
* Outlook Express (Thunderbird)
* MS Office (Open Office)
* Photoshop (The Gimp)
* MS Publisher (Scibus)

It's inevitable that Bluray will win the format war(50 G will always beat 30 G) with the growth of HDTV and sales of PS3(which should explode in 2008 especially once Little Big Planet is released as well as lower price, return of rumble, large library, better net service & Home).

Now Toshiba and co need to do the honourable thing and concede and buy a BD licence. Come to think of it, likewise M$ xbox 360. The faster Micro$oft becomes a pure games developer(eg Sega) the bett...

XP already does the job. In the same way, why buy the latest version of MS Office when the current or prev version provides you with everthing you need? It's not like we're talking about entirely new products.

It doesn't make sense to fork out more money $$ for something you already have and even more money $$ for hardware so that new piece of software is working at its best.

Micro$oft has a cash cow with its OS monopoly on PCs.....and now they are trying to do t...

vista will eventually come out on top due to M$ market dominance. It's inevitable.

Now I can only hope and pray that Google, Oracle, IBM or Sony develop their own distribution of Linux or Apple ports OsX to the PC. Or that the PC Console becomes the benchmark for gaming consoles - eg PS3.

Micro$oft is a business - providing goods/service for a profit $$$.

Securing, maintaining or expanding market share is essential for any successful business.

Various tactics such as vendor lockin, OEM, IP or discounting are used to achieve the objective. Those tactics get even worse when a company is a virtual monopoly.

Now Micro$oft has entered the gaming console industry. They don't want healthy competition especially when they've had a monopoly ...

I'm holding out for Suse because I'm just too lazy.

Apart from opening up the GPu fully to Linux and providing more Ram, Sony really needs to produce and install its own optimized distribution.

Average Joe needs to know that the PC Console has arrived and is good to go once you take it off the shelf.

C'mon Sony, just do it!
