It is likely wii2 would force the competition to move up their plans a fair bit, if wii2 is quite a lot faster than their current machines as it should be then they will probably look to get to market before 2013 or very early into that year.

At the very least expect us to be made aware of their new machines next year and the early dev footage and tech demos to come pouring out no later than E3 2012. This would be with the express aim of slowing wii2 sales and swaying potenti...

That is your mistake, you looked at launch benchmarks, with immature drivers. 5870 is comfortably faster than 4870 crossfire now and has been for a year at least. AMD are notorious for poor multi GPU support as their cards age, so single card will win more and more readily on newer games.

There are many demanding games out there that can make use of a fast card and its not just the games themselves, with added features like multi screen surround and 3D which i use myself, the...

I think the DX11 effects are the point. So by saying besides them, that is kinda silly. Like saying besides the DX11 effects in Metro....well Metro looks its very best with DX11. Ditto AvP, Lost planet 2, BF:BC2 etc.

While 4870 crossfire is still a reasonable gaming configuration, it is slower than a single 5870 and not really any faster than a 6870 which is a $180/£150 GPU brand new. Indeed there were still clearance GTX480 and 5870's hanging around here only a few ...

If not for potential L4D ports then its great news for the future of valve games on PS3, namely, Half Life Episode 3.

Expect Episode 3 to be another world class title and PS3 to enjoy these benefits there too.

DD only still has a fair few kinks to be worked out for console platforms. Namely, the idea that people would prefer to buy at full price on DD services games they could buy cheaper at retail or trade in after they have played them. That is a fairly big factor in many console gamer's eyes.

Publishers and hardware manufacturers are no doubt exceptionally keen to make DD work, as they not only have better control over their platforms, they take far more of a cut from softwa...

Is it just me or is everyone bandying about the term shader model 4.1 without clearly knowing what that actually means.....

Shader model and DirectX here are terms used to refer to the compatability of a GPU's hardware with a Microsoft owned API. While newer is of course technically superior, the GPU itself can still be pretty crap and support features inside DirectX10.1, even though it might not be powerful enough to even execute them.

This informati...

It will depend on timing, timing its release is crucial. The sooner a wii2 more powerful than 360 and PS3 arrives the better for nintendo- the more multi platform games it could get that are better than the other consople versions and the more core gamers might have their eye drawn to it. Nintendo must address the other key thing first though, and that is online.

If Nintendo want more core gamers, they must revamp their online system and follow a PSN type service, IMO.

Ummmm....yeah. I think i said that...and covered it fairly well. Namely the idea that if any developer could benefit from more staff then it would be polyphony.

5537d ago 2 agree1 disagreeView comment

Polyphony almost certainly do need more employees for modelling. Turn 10 have three times the number of staff, and even have contracted some for modelling work. GT5 had a huge budget for wages for 100 people over 5 years, maybe they could double their employ and deliver a game in half that time for the same money...?

Of course huge development teams mean that quality control and directing the game become more difficult, a small team is a flexible communicative team. However m...

Your system is as fastest as the slowest part is a fair point. But its not really as important to games consoles, because most of them are designed and balanced by engineers. As i said, A much faster GPU with a decent CPU would be far faster than either 360 or PS3.

A GPU matters more to games performance than a CPU. This is also a fact. Which is also why GPU is STILL the best thing to estimate performance of a console roughly, as most consoles are balanced.

A...

If PS3's memory, bandwidth and CPU are so greatly superior than 360's but its GPU is only slightly worse, then how comes most of the time they are so evenly matched. Or even further, how comes most of the time 360 even wins on multi format games? Why doesn't 360 get hammered everytime on everygame?

Well various reasons. But one major re...

GPU performance is usually used as guide because it is the most limiting determining component for graphics. You also have to assume that the design of the machine will be fairly balanced by the engineers. That is unless you believe the designers would actually pair a decent GPU with a decade old CPU and equivalent memory...

Dear me. Abysmal speculation. There is plenty of talk around the Radeon R700 series though, so i'll roughly estimate GPU performance for ya'll, and my comparison will be Xenos in Xbox 360.

Radeon 4670 = approx 75 percent faster
Radeon 4830 = approx 125 percent faster
Radeon 4890 = approx 250 percent faster

Bear in mind these are only rough estimates and based on fixed reference memory speeds and the overheads of a PC OS. In a stripped ...

PS3 is by no means finished, not now, not this year, not even in 12 months from now. It'll still be around in two years producing quality titles for those who own the machine.

However.

If Microsoft launch the end of next year, and Nintendo launch mid 2012 too, then you will all almost certainly be asking for the next playstation. This is how it always works. Once the competition have shown their hand then it is only natural for the questions to be raised ...

You can estimate based on PC graphics technology. New consoles are extremely unlikely to use more video memory than the fastest cards around at the time of their launch, they are more likely to actually use less due to cost constraints. When 360 and PS3 launched the fastest cards were all 512mb per GPU, like the 7800GTX, X1800XT etc. This left the consoles with 512mb total and approx 256mb video memory.

Right now the fastest single GPU card is the GTX580 and it has a 384 bit ...

Playstation: 2mb system RAM. 1mb VRAM

Playstation 2: 32mb system RAM, (4mb embedded)

Playstation 3: 256mb system RAM, 256mb video RAM.

As you can see, the amount of memory in each iteration of generation goes up by around 16 times. Thus (512 x 16) 8GB of memory is a perfectly realistic figure for machines that might arrive in say 18 months - 2 years. 4Gb video, 4Gb system.

FYI out there, PS3 has 256mb of GDDR3 650mhz video me...

R700 could mean anything up to a Radeon 4890, or 800 shaders. 512mb RAM could also easily refer to just video RAM for example, so the machine could have 512 video and 512 system for a total of 1GB. A Radeon 4890 is no slouch even today, and is plenty faster than anything PS3 or 360 could do.

Even if the GPU is 'only' a 4770 class part, it would still be at least twice as powerful as 360 or PS3. Of course this means it will likely be vastly outpowered by any new sony o...
