I think it is likely PS4 and the Next xbox will be quite a lot faster than this, as they are more likely to launch right at the end of 2012, or even later. By the time we get to that point, even 6970 and GTX580 will not be any better than midrange performance. You can be absolutely certain of that.
As i said, a 4870 is only about half as fast as a 6870. It was new way back in mid 2008. 6870 itself is only midrange currently. 4870 level of performance isn't anything specta...
Also Radeon R770 = Radeon 48xx series, @ 766mhz, that basically means a mildly overclocked Radeon 4870 (750mhz stock) most likely.
This type of machine would be approx 4 times as fast as 360 and PS3. It would be enough to knock out better visuals in 1080p resolutions than either existing HD console could do in just 720p. Thing is, it states 16mb eDRAM. That would only actually be enough for a 1280 x 720 framebuffer if that is its intended use. This might be an early indicatio...
If sony aren't stupid they will have set up dedicated content servers and extra bandwidth for this stuff ready for when it goes live so they don't bring down the normal PSN servers.
Anyone can see that as soon as it goes up the servers are gonna be hit up for petabytes of bandwidth in the first few weeks...
Agrees with Thrillhouse, sorry, but architecture changes. You are a glutton for punishment if you insistantly stick with older technologies if better, newer, proven ones exist. Its ignorant foolishness.
If CELL is no longer deemed viable as it is a decade old design, then sony should not hesitate to bin it. Intel went down the path of pentium 3, and 4, for years. Longer and longer pipelines. They finally decided it was a mistake after being trounced by AMD's athlons and b...
The last game had excellent performance on and offline. It was triple buffered, 30 frames a second. Extremely rarely it dipped down to...28 frames a second. This is fantastic performance.
Gears of War was the second game this console generation that wowed me- Oblivion was the first. I still think Oblivion looked better, but then i did actually play that on a powerful PC back in early 2006. Gears was for quite a while the best looking console game though.
Gears 3 should be the best looking game on 360 from what i have seen of it, no problems. However there wasn't a lot of actual gameplay shown in this trailer. Only a couple seconds in the latter half of it....
It did work out for microsoft. They wanted to launch a machine fairly quickly, powerful, and get a foot in the industry well over a year after PS2 launched. In those respects, it was a success and made a reasonable impact.
Microsoft learnt lessons from xbox, that to own the rights for the design rather than buy the chips. This was the main problem with the cost of manufacture with xbox, along with the hard drives. That doesn't mean you cannot license and buy a design off ...
@ Estranged- like how was the xbox more powerful than PS2 and Gamecube. It used off the shelf parts. It was later to market, but used fairly recent components to build it, which cost microsoft nothing to develop. A year is all the difference in this industry- Designing your own parts may be well and good but it costs a huge amount and any delays mean that you lose advantage anyway.
Timing is everything in this industry, one year you design a chip and have problems with it, by...
One of the main reasons PS3 cost so much to develop was because Sony took it upon themselves to develop their own processor with IBM and Toshiba.
NGP uses an off the shelf chipset (an ARM CPU, with PowerVR graphics) with mild customisations.
Sony can massively reduce the development costs of their next machine by buying off the shelf components and designs, thereby letting IBM/Intel/Nvidia/Whoever foot the bill for the development of those components.
COD will be built for consoles, and consoles sales.
BF3 is being built primarily for Pc which is as good as a next generation platform right now.
This will make all the difference.
Bluray was as much as marketing move as it was for being genuinely useful for games. Saying that, it began to be clear that catering for the lowest common demoninator (i.e 360's dvd) meant it would only ever be good for exclusive PS3 games. It did introduce me to bluray movies too though, and i am a big movie fan so no regrets here.
With regards hardware, then the GPU is the worst choice. The problem was that sony did not commission a custom GPU like microsoft nor select ...
Doom 3 is a good pick for 2004, but Far Cry has had more impact visually on games from a technical perspective. Not least of all because after a patch it was one of the first games with proper dev supported HDR and AA.
This also has to count more for me because without said game, Crytek may not have been around to make Crysis how they did which has been and arguably still is the benchmark.
BrianG, you do realise that 1920 x 1080 is more than twice the resolution the consoles run this game at? That is kinda wayyy for me...
Plus i prefer the 60 frames version. The smoothness in racers is important. A lone 9800GT and an old core 2 duo will have no problems running this game in 1080p and with better AA/AF than the consoles.
Certainly this represents a 'low end' gaming machine in 2011, as much faster cards like the Radeon 5770 cost as little...
LOL like anyone is still using FAT on their home computer that would be remotely good enough to run this game anyways....
Your point of view will probably be formed by your life and age at the time. For me, the Golden era was of the Playstation 1, N64 and then Dreamcast between about 1997 and 2000. Goldeneye, Metal gear solid, Shenmue etc. I was at the perfect age then to just drink in the games at the time, and had my best friends around me to enjoy them with, the happiest years of my life so far and so on.
This makes me look back at that era most fondly, despite having previous generations of ...
Hmmm- the problem is, even if they are real, the compression is so terrible you couldn't even make a good comparison. They are scaled down, low resolution, badly compressed with lots of artifacting and macroblocking.
Near useless as comparisons go
To think i am still waiting for the crysis 2 DX11 patch :-/
Rhode Island will come on first :-) lol
PSN is live....NOW
3.61 update, it is slowly coming back up.
Don't be upset if you cannot get the update immediately. I have reports from friends in europe that have fragmented but functioning service. The network may not stabilise for several hours, so chillout yall.
I would be happy to see Peacewalker and 3 updated. MGS1 was on PC, i still have it although widescreen support and higher resolutions would be nice, as would using twin snakes assets and restoring the cutscenes and audio to the original version. Highly unlikely, i know.
2 was on PC as well and in that case, i played it already 6 or 7 years ago in 1080p. The PC version supports full 1920 x 1080.
3 and Peacewalker however have no HD release. In particular i wou...
