The server maintenance was already paid for with the initial purchase though. Multiple people may purchase and re-sell the same game, but only one person is accessing the servers at a time.
No other industry makes money off the used market. I don't think the games industry should be any different.
Don't get me wrong though. I believe in supporting the developers by buying new. I always buy my games new.

The movie industry does not have a problem with rentals because the rental chains pay for rental licenses.
You can't really compare the rental market with the used games market.
I would be in favor of playing a female assassin. If memory serves me correctly there are two female statues in the assassin's lair. One of them had a snake and looked Egyptian. I would very much like to play an Egyptian assassin.

The Metal Gear Solid series was never a PS exclusive in the first place. Metal Gear Solid was also released on the PC, Metal Gear Solid 2 was released on the Xbox, and Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes had a Gamecube release. Not to mention that the Metal Gear franchise itself didn't even start on a PS platform.

EA/Dice got flak because console owners had unreasonable expectations. Their unreasonable expectations were not met so it resulted in disappointment.
Console owners should never have expected the console versions of the game to be on par with the PC version.

Games were released at $29.99 in 1986. Factoring in inflation that would be $61.83 today. So games are actually $1.84 cheaper than they were two and a half decades ago.
