The thing is that the PS3 already had all of its big guns come out in Japan except for FFXIII: Gundam, MGS4, and LBP if that counts. All have come and gone, the PS3 received a momentary bump, and then bleh; the continued increases never came.

Also, it's obvious that the 360 will never hit 5 million--that's not news to anybody. Hell, it will never hit 2 million!

To be fair, the PS3 SHOULD be beating the 360 in Japan. The only reason you heard from those people during those few times was because they were excited about seeing the long shot get a couple punches in.
That might explain the lack of titles for the PSP.
Actually what we're looking at is overall 2008 numbers vs. 2007 numbers during the same period of time.
Basically, the DS and Wii's slightly down years are effecting the entire market (as the PSP and 360 are actually up for the year, while the PS3 is essentially 1-for-1 from this year to last).

The real news is that LBP is going to be beaten (already has been) by Wii Music. A real triumph of hardcore games, that.
The market decline in Japan can be directly measured by the difference in Wii and DS sales for the year. 360 is actually up a little bit, and the PS3 is extremely close to static.
Famicom = Family Computer = Nintendo Entertainment System.
Mega Drive = Sega Genesis.
Who knows why Nintendo shortened two words in English to make it sound Japanese? Who knows why SEGA used to be so bad-ass? These are the questions of our lives.
I can't fault you at all for not knowing, but it is definitely base knowledge required to be part of the gaming history conversation, especially as it relates to Japan.

Right. It's pretty much old news at this point that the 360 won't sell in Japan, even with more jRPGs and a lower hardware price. To be fair, this was the first week in the past two months that the PS3 actually DID outsell the 360, so let's not get too excited d00d.

Agreed. It's amazing how well Sony has actually done in leveraging the PS2 audience to come over to the PSP. I'm wondering on whether or not the DSi will take those gains back though...
