Cool to see some SCE games in the top 10 finally.
Wow, PSP is getting a pretty healthy library of great selling titles! Dissidia should definitely hit a million now.
I know you've been proven wrong already several times, but I wanted to make sure you know my opinion on your opinion: LOLZ.
Don't forget, for the first two years the PS2 was out, the PS1 was still receiving blockbusters like DQVII and FFIX. Those came out at the tail-end of the PS1's life cycle and PS2's backwards compatibility directly addressed that and helped the audience transition across.
One might point to the Wii and its GC backwards compatibility, but would a...
The question is how much of an effect DQX and Monster Hunter will have on Wii hardware sales. Is that audience already there, or will we see a huge influx of Japanese RPG fans come over when they release?
We're talking about 2-3 million more people here.
About competition, they clearly DO have competition, it's just themselves. And the PSP...which is getting that MH audience I just referenced.
You know, that's the funny thing--it has never mattered what hardware is available out there for developers...they always find a way and they always continue to grow and innovate regardless.
If the 360 wasn't out there, the PS3 would be an unmitigated success and we all know it.
Agreed. It's cool to see a console basically written off in Japan improve their yearly numbers when everybody else is down. You think they'll try a third time when next-gen rolls around?
I assume you're being lolz right now, but in case somebody doesn't get your sarcasm, there are millions of people left to sell to in Japan.
1. It actually IS doing well, just slightly not-as-well as last year.
2. The point is that even though it is slightly contracted from the previous year, nothing has changed in terms of market share.
Too bad the Wii isn't getting the games that PS2 was getting at the same point in its life cycle.
It's weird to see the 360 improve year-over-year by 40% and be soooo far from statistically relevant in Japan.
I think it's a combination of several things, including what you mentioned. Part of it may be that the Tomb Raider brand has been sullied, not unlike the Need For Speed series.
I think the writing has been on the wall for Eidos for some time now. With this and the layoffs, the outlook is certainly stark.
I would love to see it happen, but I'm afraid PS2 BC is gone forever. Our only hope is to be able to download PS2 games from PSN, similar to Virtual Console.
Hey, it could happen!
I know you're being lolz here, but technically this was DS's worst year ever, the PS3 was down, the Wii was down, and the PS2 was obviously down.
The only systems that enjoyed a year-on-year increase were the PSP and the 360.
So no, not really. Not sure if the recession had anything to do with sales being down but they are surely a factor.
Media Create Data is always Japan and Japan-only.
I'm not sure why you'd be embarrassed to say it.
It's a shame that the 360 isn't selling more software in Japan, though.
1. Cool that Dissidia is doing so well. I thought it would follow the Crisis Core sales-line and it looks like it will pass it handily.
2. Nintendo really is a beast right now. Interesting that Nintendo's current longtail strategy doesn't just work for non-games, but for its staple franchises as well.
But that would go against every precedent that we know of. It won't magically start selling 35-45k per week when it never has. We're observing the holiday-period bump, nothing more.
This is the same argument that was being made for the 360 when it vaulted to 20k+ for a couple weeks back in October. We knew what it was and called it that (a momentary bump), but nope, what did we hear? "ITS COMING BACK!"
Sure, the price is relevant, but does that matter to devs and pubs choosing which next console to put a game on?
I'm not sure how long the price-crutch will continue to hold in these discussions. Sure, it matters, but eventually it needs more consoles in more houses, or software sales will also suffer...which they are.
It's a circular argument that doesn't matter in the board room. Poop or get off the pot, my mom used to say.
It's pretty good for a second place console, but yeah--I expected it to do a bit better.
This is technically the (Best) version of the game which means it's like the Platinum versions we get here in the States.
