If Microsoft was in third place I doubt they would feel like they NEED to make XBL free just as if Sony was in Second place I doubt they would drop the free service of PSN.

Yes it's our choice to pay for DLC, but the thing is it shouldn't even exist in the first place. Prior to this gen, sidequests where in game secrets and costumes were in game unlockables.
Games are being made with DLC in mind nowadays so we are essentially paying more for less of a game when compared to last gen.
