The point is that we need to break this barrier so that we don't need to debate it in future. Right now, I'm sure there are some designers who want to add in genuinely mature sexual content, but fear doing so will evoke a media backlash.

I agree that all games don't *need* sex to make them edgy. But we need push for the barrier to be broken so that indie artists are able to work without fear of reprisal. Once that barrier is broken, devs will still only put in wha...

Mentioning characters who look like kids is beating around the bush here, and strawmanning the argument.

As for the "keep games about games" part, I fail to inderstand how that makes more sense than "no sex in movies; keep movies about movies"?

Most mature gamers are comfortable about sex these days anyway, with its existence being normalised in mainstream media. No longer is religious dogma ruling our entertainment!

As an...

Because fantasy is never "just fantasy". All playable species are humanoids. Accents are relatable. The grass is green, not purple, the sky is blue and the creatures are familiar (not flying candy unicorns).
There are degrees of fantasy, with Harry Potter representing a low degree and LotR/Dragon Age reflecting a higher degree.

But my point really is why would the figure be more than 5% unless the authors have a dishonest agenda? There is no rational reason ...

There's a big difference between treating homosexuals as equals and putting them up on a pedestal as betters.

If you look at the numbers, and take an open mind in trying to be fair to everyone, you'll realise that these claims have zero merit, and that just one LGBT romance option is a gift (5% of the population were born homosexual, which means one in twenty party members would be if they used real world stats; there is no reason to change this number)

Subjective comment. Think of twenty random movies and let me know how many *don't* have a romantic subplot or two.

For the people out there who aren't in a happy relationship, are over ten years old or prefer deep, meaningful games over CoD/FIFA, romances can be a very enjoyable and interesting part of the game.

I honestly wouldn't buy Dragon Age games if they didn't feature such romances for more than £5. Without them, they're shallo...

I find these comments to be incredibly unfair. Assuming that around 5% of the population (and therefore DA playerbase) are homosexual, (that's actually the most liberal estimate I could find) then only 1 in 20 players get to experience these romances.

Why should Bioware invest equal time into non-heterosexual romances when only 5% of the players will ever use see them? Seriously, I'm about as liberal as you can get, but people need to stop calling for unfairness "...

True, but if that were the case, small, research-intensive tech firms wouldn't stand a chance against monopolistic giants (like Facebook, which the Rift might have struggled to see a release without) which benefit from economies of scale.

If a small firm puts a lot of work into perfecting one tiny element of the completed VR headset, they are entitled to their fair share of the resulting profit if it is utilised.

Of course, that's providing the claim ...

I think their claim is that the Zenimax technology bridged the gap between Oculus Rift Devkit 1 and Crystal Cove. Hard to tell without knowing *exactly* what tech they believe has been shared.

Pragmatically speaking...if Zenimax *were* to have an equity stake in Oculus then we'd be absolutely certain to see Bethesda Softworks games be well-optimised for the platform.

@Aleithian

I wouldn't be that harsh on DA2 myself. Despite its flaws, I actually quite enjoyed it, despite the fact that story was *all* it had on its side. I suppose the narrative clouded my ability to see the flaws I now acknowledge, but I certainly enjoyed my first playthrough.

I won't pre-order myself. I'm done with pre-ordering altogether after being severely burned by Rome 2, but I do expect to buy it upon reading positive reviews.

You're right, and I'm British, so unbiased on this. FOX News, retailers who refuse to stock AO games and, to some extent, Sony, Microsoft and Steam are the problems (for restricting such games on their platforms; though steam is making strides through closing the gap between dev and buyer)

We need to campaign as an international lobby group to make the controversy about such content in games a controversy in itself. Boycotting FOX when it puts out slanderous reports, ...

Because like it or not, it's actually a HUGE part of human life. I mean what did prehistoric man do other than hunt and breed?

I would expect that the only reason a gamer might not support it, when done in a mature/artistic way is due to immaturity or that they don't play thougt-provoking/artistic games. The former is fair if you're a child, and the latter if you're just someone who plays CoD/FIFA, but for others, this is for some reason proving to be a huge b...

High expectations much?

Skyrim arguably has the best (biggest, most atmospheric) open world ever seen in a single player game.

My jaw would drop of they topped Bioware on environment + exploration.

4300d ago 1 agree0 disagreeView comment

To be fair, what they lose in exploration, they make up for in story and characters. I mean, Skyrim is essentially an exploration-based RPG, hence why companions are poorly done and the game is so atmospheric. If it were superior, Bethesda would have an inferior product on all fronts, which I don't see happening.

The fact Bioware have taken exploration this far has pleasantly surprised me.

Stupid idea. For value, you can just divide the rating by the price yourself, with higher values indicating comparatively better deals.

Plus prices change all the time, which makes reviews impossible to compare (their primary function).

Like seasickness breaks recreational maritime travel...

People will get used to it and it will go away. I used to get carsick as a child, but I don't any more. Horror movies used to scare me, but they don't any more. I imagine there will be a "breaking-in" period for any new VR user before they experience no more motion sickness.

True, but going back to gaming on a flat screen will be like returning to black and white TV.

Indeed, the novelty value will wear off, but it will then just become standard, as colour TV is today (once, colour TV was seen as a fad, but after an initial novelty period, it just became the norm).

Really? Splitscreen co-op is dead anyway, and with a Rift/Morpheus, people can just bring their headsets over for offline play (no screen-watching for FPS fans). Also, you're probably willing to share controllers, and I assure you that someone's face is generally cleaner than the part of their body they wipe their ass with (you can never be sure people wash their hands well enough); not to mention the perpetual issue of greasy controllers from the hands of "crisp-eaters".
