Brand loyalty is only going to allow nVidia to continue to get away with ludicrously high prices for their cards in future.

Right, and I now see where you're coming from regarding criticising a game's systems for miscommunicating a message.
I mean, it's quite true that an artist's skill is often measured in their ability to transmit the ideas they wish to transmit, measured by their ability to make them understood by the viewer!

I agree it's good for games to raise conversations about topics among the community, but I get worried when the criticism is directed at the developer themselves.

I mean, if you don't like a work of art, you can call it awful, argue with those who claim it is great or choose not to bother with it, but there's a real danger that in attacking the artist herself for what she has portrayed, we might end up intimidating people into conforming, and make it "not wor...

So Jim has a problem with a game promoting racism. While I agree I would probably find a game which does this distasteful and wouldn't want to buy it, I DO NOT have a right to criticise its existence.

Freedom requires allowing all points of view to exist in media, and that includes views that we as a society and as individuals find repulsive.

But then I don't think anyone cares these days. The wheels of liberal-authoritarianism roll on and one day, co...

Yeah, the best way to play games is to turn off the music, skip the cutscenes and just shoot stuff up when bored...if you're seven years old.

RDFG is the best.

If only people realised that by simply not being fanboys, third party exclusives could almost be completely stopped, and they'd be able to play more games on whichever platform they opt to buy.

I agree with you when it's about the game's themes or artistic content and on a community level rather than personal, but when complaints are about the gameplay itself, people are not compromising artistic integrity unfairly by complaining that mechanics are too simplistic or unimaginative, or that the graphics are poor.

Which is why complaining about this is legit but complaining about FC4 or Dragon Age Inquisition romances was and still is, not.

Indeed, it's important that we protect the rights of LGBT people to freedom of expression and help them become tolerated by society.

The problem is when some homosexuals start trying to ram their sexuality down other peoples' throats at every opportunity, which only builds resentment (I'm sure many fair-minded members of the LGBT community share my view that this doesn't help anyone)

I have never had any issue with homosexuality whatsoever. Ev...

Why are there so few gay and female protagonists?

Because most gamers are male and straight and we generally like to play people we can easily empathise with the best. I have no problem with games with female or gay leads existing, but I'm simply going to be less likely to buy them. If you think that makes me evil then you're psychotic.

The people who spend their time complaining when companies don't pander to their whims should stop writing artic...

While I'm not opposed to anyone else, I prefer to play people who are culturally the same as me (British, but failing that, someone from another Anglosphere nation), the same gender as me (heterosexual male) and indeed who look similar to me.
This isn't racist, it's just a harmless preference for how I wish to enjoy my private entertainment (a protagonist who I can easily relate to in all ways; if we, given complete choice and neutral setting, choose characters who don'...

This article makes a stupid error; putting more women on your game design teams *might be associated with* better games (you cannot assert causality without overwhelming evidence - and I haven't even seen an actual statistical study on this, so assume it is nothing but anecdotal conjecture). It would make sense that if studios are sexist, they have lower quality games, but that has nothing to do with raw female employee numbers; just the level of discrimination at the point of hiring (hir...

Didn't you hear? Two people complained on the internet...a backlash.

I have nothing against female characters or employees doing well, but it should be natural and there should be no bias. For example simply putting measures in place to eradicate discrimination on physical characteristics in employment practices and ensuring that female characters are proportional to the number of women who will play that game.

Equity not equality :)

That's great, but it doesn't change the fact that Bioware need to put effort into homosexual and heterosexual romances proportional to the amount of people who will actually use them.

The only problem I see here is a community so intolerant of homosexuality to begin with that the author claims they "probably wouldn't still be alive".

I really hope society loses all this baggage so the SJW's will shut up and we'll see a new age of...

Golden age? Try dark age.

I wish people would just leave me to make up my own mind without having to be preached to.

Let's keep gaming discussions focused on entertainment and technical questions and let us process the moral leanings of developers in private.

I'm sick of conversations like this, as they always lead to people with a great degree of moral arrogance informing developers that their opinions (as they present them in games)...

If Bioware want to do first contact, they should do so through a solid ios game or a smaller, indie-type non-rpg experience.

The main series has to keep moving forward. I really hope this refers to making contact with other planets once more after a period of isolation caused by the destruction of the mass relays.

@johndoe

I beg to disagree (somewhat) about your latter sentences. Mocking people for belief in god is silly, as it is merely an inclination towards spiritualism, unproven, but only marginally less rational than atheism.
Mocking people who culturally associate with religion X (these may be atheists who generally follow at least some teachings and traditions from a religion) a belief in cultural superiority, which is quite a stupid thing to do as well.

Well it doesn't matter *why* they put it in; only the reaction it evokes in the audience.

I can see how for some, who watch it in the living room with other people it can be a little awkward.

If watching GoT alone, there are three possible reactions I can imagine. One is you become sexually stimulated by it, which I find would have been a possible reaction to such content in the pre-2000's, but not in the current era of o...

Would you call the Game of Thrones directors childish? I love having brutal and hedonistic environments shown simply because they create an atmosphere much unlike that in the real world today. A dark, dangerous atmosphere where anything can happen would be superior to the safe gaming cribs we have today.

I'd argue that while it's childish to take offense at the Game of Thrones sex, the mature attitude is to not care.
