League of Legends has taken a popular custom map and turned it into a casual "feel good" world that provides action packed gameplay for free.

I don't see League of Legends as anything out of the ordinary, it's popularity will drastically fall now that Hereos of Newerth is Free to Play, with more available heroes per week and better balance - but...
Surely, the game functions better than DotA because of a much newer engine, however the gameplay and balance is still superior in DotA. LoL & HoN are just waiting platforms to when DotA2 comes out.
Doesn't matter really. DotA2 is coming, games will be destroyed.
This will be Valve's new egg. They will sit on it and hatch it to millions of customers that will probably leave Episode 3 "business" way, way out of schedule.
Sorry to say, but DotA has a playerbase as big as World of Warcraft spanding, surely it's a Free to Play model with cracked WC3 & several platforms like Garena, DotAPLAY etc. but there are so many players.
I can see the idea hosting a Xbox360 FPS tournament because it has the highest playerbase, but you simply do not get the jaw dropping esport performances you seek if you do not use the PC as the platform of tournaments.
Best of luck to the participants and let's hope they actually get a decent ruleset so we do not see Stopping Power planted on every player.

Defense of the Ancients (Warcraft III Custom Map) most famous developer Icefrog has been hired by Valve to create DOTA2. It may not be named Defense of the Ancients, as everything created in the WC3 map editor is Blizzard property and thus it's DOTA2 with no "acronym" attached to it.

I haven't played FortressCraft, neither do I intend to. Simply because I am bored of the genre. It's a sandbox world with little to do. I do however, agree with Arcas, that not every type of these games is a Minecraft clone. FortressCraft is however, a Minecraft clone. It's like saying Heroes of Newerth isn't a DotA clone, because it offers different content after taking the entire concept and put their own original ideas into it.

It used to be: Make a game. Continously update this game to attract more buyers. Use the revenue of the game to make new games. Rinse and repeat.
By time, things change. People have to realise this. Purchaseable DLC is now an integrated part of most major franchises. I have actually never bougth a DLC myself, simply because I dislike how things have changed. The DLC is not better than the previous free content updates. They just put a price tag on it.

Who wouldn't want to become another Activision Studio? Sure, the "scandal" with Infinity Ward left it's marks, they are however still hosting the companies who made the most selling FPS, RTS & MMORPG in history.
Obviously, there were disputes between IW & Activision and kids - things like this happen in business. You won't always agree and when that happens, promises are broken and people are hurt.

If they have been smart enough to be able to upgrade their graphics to compete with "next-gen" and continously support this as their only game in process, then yes. It might stick if their launch is good.
League of Legends only works because it's said "free". You have to spend a long time playing or alot of cash to unlock the content, which I think is disgusting.
You download this game with 15% of it's content, the rest is either purchased or played for over 200.000 hours(this is calculated on avg. game time crossed with cost of content).
Riot Games have done well, their userbase stepped right into a trap.

Oh how I loved the original Driver. Spend hours on my Playstation trying to complete this game, unfortunately it seems the remakes we get in 2k11 is just terrible.
Blizzard has never sold gameplay advantages. Never. They sell cosmetics and that is a stance that they have promised and kept that promise for more than 10 years now, even in World of Warcraft with 10 million subscribers, you cannot purchase gameplay advantages from Blizzard.
