I saw various videos of that game (one of my favorites is the one where Conan was at E3) and they all showed the framerate chugging horrifically all the time. It was a mess. Why run the game at 1080p if the framerate is so terrible as a result?

That's probably a common practice. I've seen tons of guys in game development sleep in their cubicles, in their offices, oftentimes directly on the floor or in their chairs. Lots of overtime out of pure passion (and meeting those fucking deadlines)

Quake 3 had better netcode than Q2 did, and Quake 3 still has some of the finest netcode around.
The Dreamcast did have a Broadband adapter you could buy, and it was bundled in with some Dreamcast bundles. I remember that the Dreamcast version of Quake 3 allowed cross-platform play with the PC users (Dreamcast version did have keyboard & mouse support as well.)
