To answer your hypothetical - YES, it would be a big time deal breaker, which is why I doubt this has any chance of happening, of course, I should not be shocked any more if it did because the Sony executives are hellbent to run the company into the ground it seems.
PS3 and XB360 are going to look roughly the same in graphics (whether or not the fanboys can deal with that now or later, it will be reality).

Here is the problem as I see it.
Pricing does not reflect quality of the game. A great game and a crap game both cost $60 US new, but they do NOT offer the same value for the purchase. The fact that a game like Oblivion may offer some gamers 200+ hours of gameplay, or for myself a game like BF2:MC will offer a couple hundred hours of online play, is not taken into account versus a game like Kameo, which I personally felt sucked (I know others did enjoy it, just not me).

Well, since Sony themself has said they will PRODUCE no more than 4 Million units in 2006 (which I highly doubt to begin with), it is physically IMPOSSIBLE for them to overtake the 360 in 2006 simply because if they sell 0 the rest of the year, MS still has more than 4 Million in the market NOW.

I could be totally off here, but doesn't the single-layer vs. dual-layer distinction rest entirely on the software (discs) and have nothing to do whatsoever with the hardware (BD or HD-DVD drive)?

Microsoft and XBox 360 don't have to do a damn thing to disrupt the PS3 launch or its long term success. The Sony executives are doing a bang-up job of that all on their own.
All they have to do is focus on making games and getting them to market while the Sony team falls all over themselves in a mishmash of contradictions and wild statements. (My personal favorite was from the clown who actually said they could sell 5 Million units at launch with NO GAMES AT ALL. LMAO)
why wait? If you like gaming and are looking for solid hardware now, the XB360 is readily available and has a building library of games.
Chances are unless you like to camp out in front of stores or have a relative working for Sony or a game shop, you won't see a PS3 this year anyway. Caching to the HDD is NOT a PS3 exclusive ability. The 360 COULD do that just as well, what could NOT do it is the Core 360 without a HDD add-on.
I don't want to put words in the OP's mouth, but I think the slow load time is a reference to the Blu-Ray's somewhat pedestrian load times for movies (somewhere around 25-30 seconds from disc to screen). The games on XB were better than GC (graphically) and they were both better than PS2. I know for a fact that the graphics on NCAA and Madden 2006 for XB were MUCH better than the graphics on PS2. The GAMEPLAY was almost identical - right down to the annoying glitches in AI - but the graphics showed a clear distinction in clarity and detail.

I chose Far Cry Instincts : Predator. I have no regrets because although in the minority by far, I enjoyed FC more than COD2 when I had them on rentals.
