Yes, as I mentioned before, the artists produce 24-bit textures, the GPU processes 24-bit textures and when uncompressed they have the same space and bandwidth requirement but since textures are compressed, a 24-bit monochrome texture shrinks down to 1/3rd of the space and bandwidth of a 24-bit full color texture because monochrome 24-bit textures are like 8-bit monochrome textures in terms of per pixel information.

"How that data is stored, how it is compressed, weather its uncompressed as it enters memory storage or decompressed on the fly as it enters the GPU registers is irrelevant."

And you expect people to believe you're a game developer?

I'll make it simple.

1) All game consoles (even Wii) use compressed textures.
2) Since all games use compression, monochrome textures only consume 1/3rd of the storage space and bandwid...

don't mean *&^*% on this board.

I've provided multiple easy to follow examples to demonstrate my points and all you've said is "hey, all the big companies pay me big bucks to make games so i'm right and you're wrong".

Unless you can provide concrete evidence to back up your claim that full color textures do not use more storage and bandwidth than monochrome textures as they move from from storage (game-disc) through to rendering (gpu) people could easi...

and it's easily demonstrated.

In prior posts I used the term 8-bit as tool to to describe the fact that monochromatic textures simply carry far less per pixel information and hence have far less storage and bandwidth requirements due to the fact that they compress to a third of the size.

As you know, data is always stored and transmitted in compressed form even in games published on Blu-Ray.

Here's an example from an image I have and I suggest you give i...

@ titntin,

I appreciate the manner in which you disagreed (refreshingly civilized!) however I must in turn disagree with you.

It is true that artists create 24-bit textures for all games but an efficient game engine minimizes those textures. This is one of the reason UE3 is so effective. It minimizes textures so well that even high resolution textures as used in Gears of War can be streamed directly from the DVD. The more monochromatic the game the more it benefit...

is to pay companies to make games for the 360 that those companies otherwise never would. This is why despite the 360 having a very low installed base and low consumer interest in japan, companies continue to make 360 games for the japanese market.

It might be a smart strategy too as 360 seems to have done a bit better of late. What's more, Microsoft is the only company with the cash to continuously buy software titles.

which is why he can't be blamed for regularly bashing the PS3, the xbox is kind of like his baby and he wants it to succeed. It's human nature and if we were in his shoes we'd all do the same.

Therefore, for Carmack to concede something like this is quite significant. He's not the only one. Rockstar was the first to suggest that making GTA V run on the 360 would be a real problem.

The lack of a hard-drive is a serious problem. The 12x CAV type (Constant Angular V...

... not really mind-blowing. It's an improvement on the original but it looks unfinished and simply lacks that extra level of detail that differentiates the games that truly show off the PS3's monstrous hardware such as MGS4, GT5: Prologue, Uncharted, and even Little Big Planet (tops even GT5 for realism).

Based on these screenshots I don't see anything that couldn't be done on the 360. The textures are good but not great, the water effects are good but not great, the models a...

I've posted a video of what just about everyone agrees is the best racing game graphics out there. If you disagree, please post evidence rather than simply hitting the disagree button. I'd be happy to discover if there's something better looking than this.

... do not affect total demand.

When the GameCube was last in sales (as the Xbox360 is now) a price cut had no lasting effect. The same is true here. Expect a temporary boost in sales followed by a return to last place.

Reliability issues aside, the Xbox360 simply does not have the universal appeal that the Wii or PS3 have. The Wii's universal appeal is due to it's accessibility while the PS3's is due to it's feature-set. The Xbox360 is neither here nor there.

1) The 360 has never enjoyed a period of sales "dominance". Before the Wii it was dominated in sales by the PS2 and now its consistently dominated by both the Wii and the PS3.

2) Its the Wii and PS3 that diminished PS2 sales (apart from the fact that nearly everyone already had one) not the 360. It's after the Wii and PS3 were released that PS2 sales really started to fall off quickly.

3) This year the 360 only outsold the PS2 by 10%. OTOH the PS3 outsol...

Carmack is right that the PS3 has a decisive technical advantage in having the Blu-Ray player.

He is right to say that when used conventionally the Xbox360 GPU is faster than the one in the PS3. The 360 works best when developers treat it like a PC and this is how Carmack likes to do things ... he has gone on record to state this a million times.

The caveat is that the PS3 GPU, when used in PS3 specific methods, where the geometry data and textures are preprocesse...

Sales were almost identical last year.

This year the PS3 pulled ahead:

PS3: 5.6M

360: 4.2M

PS3 has sold 35% more than 360 this year (1.4M gap). If you extend that out to the rest of the year and adjust for holiday sales boost you're looking of a gap of 2.5-3.5M in favor of the PS3.

So, yeah, Activision is right, the PS3 will outsell the 360 this year by a significant margin.

and in some scenes actually exceeds Crysis (although mostly its not in the same league) says quite a bit about how effective the PS3 is as a system despite the fact that the GPU is not in the same league as the latest PC graphics cards. Can it be done on a PC? Of course, even improve it and use multiple discs, then install on the hard-drive in full for an interruption less experience.

Can it be done on the 360? With some cutbacks, yes, as long as multiple discs are used and a h...

It's sad that Microsoft is screwing it's own userbase by going with cutsie Mii type "avatars". Microsoft's made a series of strategic mistakes and this could alienate the one market segment that identifies with the Xbox brand, the hard-core gamer.
