The business model is not feasible given today's infrastructure and maintenance costs. Something like OnLive might be possible in a few years if hosting cost goes down and the internet service providers allow sustained high bandwidth services to use their "pipes" or perhaps even offer a similar service directly to their customers just as they offer VOD.
Right now there's no way to make money on it and there's a very real and substantial risk that very thing that makes ...
I see someone buying a Wii while 360s and PS3s sit in the warehouse collecting dust.
It's the first console that has true universal appeal and it's all due to overall design and the innovative user interface that is intuitive and completely accessible just about everyone with hands regardless of age, gender, and background.
Nintendo made a smart move to include Wii Sports to provide a complete starter package that works out of the box. No extra purchases necessary...
Normal maps are good but overall texture quality, polygon models and effects are sub-par.
Very disappointing for an upcoming PC title. It amply demonstrates the vast gap we often see between marketing hype for an engine (with the requisite laundry list of "supported features") and actual results.
why not explain what you think is so incredible about these images? Obviously you're more impressed than I am.
For example, please describe what you find impressive about this picture ...

Those images look fine when they are small but when you see them full-size the lack of detail and rendering flaws are, sadly, quite obvious. The worst of all has to be the close-up of the character. There are enough games on PS3 and 360 which have far superior real-time character models. The close-up of the gun demonstrates the low-grade lighting and limited polygon budget. Where are the specular highlights? The variety in materials? The first picture with the chairs is also absolutely...
on a Wii. Obviously there'll be some downgrades due to the 360's tiny 10MB EDRAM framebuffer (Killzone 2 uses a massive 40MB framebuffer), weak CPU, poor CPU bandwidth, among other issues that will require a near complete rewrite of the engine.
Like GT5: Prologue, Killzone 2 is, quite simply, performing at a vastly higher level of performance than any 360 game.
Netflix streaming service has poor selection and poor quality (particularly with their new compression tech).
Sony, Amazon, Blockbuster, and many others offer much better selection.
Onlive as a product/service does not exist.
Onlive as a product/service will be too expensive for most consumers and provide lower quality and performance.
Onlive as a product/service, if it is ever built (will cost tens of millions of dollars just to get to stage 1) will be too expensive to operate and burn through all of it's capital before declaring bankruptcy due to the fact that it's a 30 times more costly way to provide gaming to consumers.
and discovering what goes on behind the scenes rather than blindly repeating company press releases. In that regard, HHG is far more of a journalist (based on this video) than IGN, Gamespot, etc... who are little more than advertising outlets.
He did a great job disarming the Crysis rep using theatrics then used pointed questions to elicit involuntary responses. Clever and fun. That's smart journalism.
in response to:
"I never said their were no weaknesses."
Here's a quote from your article in which you say:
Quote: "The streaming of video games, however, does not seem to have any immediate flaws that will save our consoles."
Nothing personal ... just pointing out the obvious.
$1 (disc) vs $30 (streaming). That's a pretty big difference. I don't see the cost of high end hosting being reduced by 97% in the ...
the lighting and modeling of both character and environment look phenomenal. The range of colors is breath-taking. My one complaint is that there are moments when the animation isn't as smooth as it was in the previous game. However, given their track record the animation will be polished to a shine by release.
Given that the previous Uncharted has (easily) the best textures yet seen in a console game, the improved lighting and modeling should make this game look incredible. ...
history is littered with panic stricken big business making poor decisions during economic turmoil. In the end, rather than put your faith institutions, you should do the math yourself and see if this makes business sense.
I, and lots of others who are trained in economics, knew years ago that the economy was going to hit a credit iceberg either in 07 or 08. Yet, apparently, GM, Ford, Honda, Toyota, Mercedes, BMW, Meryl Lynch, Citibank, as well as much of Congress, most world l...
as other PS3 games. Textures and lighting are simply average. I have to admit I'm a little disappointed by their tech in the context of graphical powerhouses like Killzone 2, Uncharted, GT5 and MGS4.
that big companies don't sign up for bad ideas was disproven by the financial meltdown that took down enormous and "well respected" investments, all of whom bought into the same stupid ideas. Anyone remember Meryl Lynch?
Big does not equal smart.
Instead, let's look at it objectively from a game publishers standpoint where the goal is to deliver 30 hours of high definition gaming to a customer's home.
DVD or Blu-Ray: $1 (to print and ship the...
is over-priced and overhyped. It is nowhere near the Cell in performance for 3D gaming. If Polyphony Digital is using more than 2 SPUs they've already outstripped the i7's capability.
However, the i7 is much faster for running Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, Excel, Outlook, and Solitaire.
The writer claims that there's no obvious weakness and that the only chance for hardware (like consoles and graphics cards) lie with "irrational" human behavior. Obviously this person is not capable of basic arithmetic.
From a game publisher's standpoint, the cost to deliver 30 hours of high definition gameplay to the customer.
DVD or Blu-Ray: $1
Streaming: $30
How is that profitable?
except that hosting cost is $1 per user per hour. Ouch!
see my previous post for details. Even giving them the benefit of the doubt that they are charging Live's monthly fee of $8/month rather than the annual fee of $50/yr, this is an investor scam at best.
$8 per month would only cover about 8 hours of HD game streaming. Most gamers will clock 20 hours a week, or 90 hours a month. That's $90/month of hosting cost that has to be recuperated somehow.
Please explain how this business model (streaming game service) makes ...
(console games often push more polygons than PC games) but this is an incredibly stupid comparison.
I hope the quality of animation has improved. The character animations in Fight Night Round 3 was horrendous.
