Gears 2 is eye-catching but, like the recently released FFXIII demo, that's almost entirely due to art. Technically, Gears 2, like the FFXIII demo, is nothing special.

Uncharted is a game that truly excels technically. Killzone 2 does as well but trades a tiny bit of visual fidelity (texture, mainly) for much better lighting and unmatched physics. GT5 Prologue kicks all competitors in the teeth by not only doubling car detail but also rendering at much higher resolutions and a...

Killzone 2, Uncharted and Uncharted 2, for example, are far more advanced from a a purely technical standpoint but then again those don't have to run on the 360. Having said that, the art and design is predictably superb.

As has been known for sometime, and reiterated in this article, doing HDR in high definition is pretty much out of the question on the 360.

While it's still clearly a work in progress the melding of technology and art have never been better realized than in the hands of Team Ico.

This is no different from the "article" that Microsoft paid various web sites to publish regarding the relative processing power of the PS3 and 360.

The sad part is that despite the fact that this ad masqeurading as an article hits (literally!) every marketing note that Microsoft wanted, from DLC to Avatars, it will not save the dwindling sales of the 360.

Despite being $199 price point, the 360 is struggling to significantly outsell the $399 PS3 and it c...

Incredible visuals. I hope they throw in 7.1 uncompressed audio as well.

These are valid criticisms. The water in the video really does not reflect the main character. The ground textures could be better designed, and there really is the occasional shadow pop-in. Not much to debate there.

Just because it's far and away the best looking game of it's kind doesn't mean it's automatically flawless.

But some small flaws:

-Water reflected scenery but not Drake.
-Some of the ground surface textures and shapes are a bit nondescript
-Occasional shadow pop-in

It's still leagues ahead of any other 3rd person shooter in terms of detail, dynamic objects, animation, etc... However, it is not flawless. Perhaps they'll iron out some of these by release.

It's the poster child for games designed around hardware limitations. There's a gamespot comparison of the same locations in Gears 1 and 2 and it's amply visible where they cut back on geometry and draw-distance in order to squeeze in a few new visual tricks.

For example chests of drawers that were smoothly curved and ornate in Gears 1 had been replaced by simple boxes with simple textures in Gears 2. Buildings too were similarly simplified and draw-distance, never a strong poi...

Physics and animation are pathetic particularly when one considers that there are only two active character models. It's improved over FN3 (which was a crime against humanity and an insult to the sport) but it's still far from acceptable. It's a shame that they didn't push the sim aspect further. Even the 360's relatively weak CPU can handle better physics and animation than what's displayed here.

Having said that 1080P native is always great to have.

Best looking FPS: KZ2 (PS3)
Best looking 3rd person shooter: Uncharted (PS3)
Best looking Racing game: GT5 Prologue (PS3)
Best looking sandbox game: Infamous (PS3)
Best looking platformer: R&C or LBP (PS3)
Best looking sports game: MLB Show (PS3)

It's pretty obvious by now that the PS3 has quite a bit more performance headroom than the 360. The reality is that the 360 maxed out about a year ago. While the 360 GPU is in the same ballpark as the ...

...yet IGN gave this games visuals an 8, a score that suggests borderline borderline acceptability, and gave GTAIV a perfect 10 from IGN. Certainly their score isn't based on technical merit.

This isn't a cross platform title so there's no need to argue about bias but inconsistency of this magnitude certainly brings the relevance of their scoring system sharply into question.

than most multiplatform games. It's in the same league as the latest Burnout.

Uncharted 1 already exceeds every console multiplatform and 360 exclusive in graphics performance.

1) Technically, the demo is not mindblowing. It looks good but from a purely technical standpoint, it's simply not in the same league as games like Uncharted and Killzone 2.

2) This is a PS3 only demo running 5GB which makes it impossible to know how well it will run on the 360. To put it simply, if the demo requires extensive CPU assistance with the graphics then the 360 version will not look as good but if it uses just the GPU for graphics then the 360 version will not be muc...

In Japan, the PS3 has overtaken the Wii while the 360 has improved from 25% to 33% of PS3 sales.

Outside Japan, the Wii continues to mercilessly dominate at 200% of PS3 sales while the 360 has floundered from having a consistent 30-40% advantage over the PS3 (for the few months immediately after the price cut to $199) to more recently posting only around 5-10% sales advantage. In contrast, before the 360's price cut, the PS3 had outsold it by 30-40% for most of 2008 despite havi...

Triangles are polygons. One can have more polygons than triangles but not more triangles than polygons.

6269d ago 1 agree1 disagreeView comment

In Crysis, your actual rendered polygons only add up to about 1-1.5 Million tris per frame.

Here's a quote from Crytek Quality Assurance Manager Sebastian Spatzek about CryEngine 2's much higher polygon limit relative to CryEngine 1.

"The polycount limit in CryEngine 2 is a lot, lot higher than in CryEngine 1. However of course there are limits that will melt even current highest end hardware. I have seen scenes with well over 2 million polygons and the fps didn...
