The graphics are 540P.

Quaz51 didn't lie. Never has.

Images don't lie either.

-Sharp text and HUD
-Blurry graphics

I guess those rascally magazines must have knowingly used some magic compression technology that only blurs anything that isn't on-screen text, and actually goes a step further by scanning each frame to find polygon edges and selectively recalculating color distribution on pixels along those edges.

Wow, I wouldn't be criticizing those magazines, I'd be congratulating them on discovering some amazing new selective compression technology.

Seriously folks ... maybe by ...

DF, as usual, correctly assess video performance but fails to understand the effect of hardware. The 360's trouble with the crowd scene is a clear indication that it was shader limited. It simply didn't have enough gas in the tank to run all the additional geometry as well as the extra pixel shader work.

The reason the PS3 version runs so much better (at times, when accounting for resolution and frame-rate, rendering twice as fast) is not because of PS3 specific shader code (36...

No article needed.

Quaz51 was referenced as the source data for the resolution and he's a widely accepted source and certainly more legitimate than some forum moderator.

As for why Microsoft "lifted" the resolution requirement (it was never truly in place to begin with since many exceptions were allowed, i.e., PGR3, COD2, etc.) it was because lower resolutions = better shading, frame-rate, and MSAA.

More resolution = more pixels = fewer GPU c...

Because of the 360's 10MB EDRAM, increasing MSAA and Resolution requires tiling which, in turn, significantly increases the geometry processing requirements.

1 tile: 592P with 2xMSAA, 720P no AA,
2 tiles: 592P with 4xMSAA, 720P with 2xMSAA, 1080P with no AA, 540P with 4xMSAA (Alan Wake)
3 tiles: 720P with 4xMSAA
4 tiles: 1080P with 2xMSAA

but I can speak for myself.

I generally avoid conversations about vague and subjective things like gameplay and stick to technical aspects which, in any case, is my area of expertise.

If a game is 540P rather than 720P, apart from being important information for the consumer that the real resolution might be different from what's advertised, it brings up some interesting questions as to why, if they're using tiling anyway (2 tiles), they chose 540P with 4xMSAA rather...

is the move motion capture fast enough to provide 60fps input?

Comes down to camera/processing latency and video frame buffers (such as double or triple buffering schemes).

Theoretically, Move could be pretty fast but, as the image on the lens goes through various buses, caches and processors on it's way to becoming input data, there are lots of potential speedbumps.

Anyone have a link to a recent demo?

Looking forward to hearing, precisely, what is so impressive about these shots.

Naturally, some are wondering why, since they're using 2 tiles anyway, they would chose 540P with 4xAA rather than 720P (1280x720) and 2xAA.

The answer is simple.

By rendering 44% fewer pixels you almost double the shader power available per pixel. In addition, 4xAA will smooth out the jaggies better than 2xAA, the 360's excellent upscaler will minimize artifacts w...

5 years later this is all we get?

Looks rather flat and cartoony.

Where are all the normal maps and high-res textures?

Uncharted 1 came out years ago and has noticably better textures and shading.

There's no technical reason why Alan Wake shouldn't look about as good as Uncharted 1 but, sadly, it simply doesn't.

but by whining about it he risks alienating his potential customers.

PC games are definitely more forgiving. THat's because most PC gamers spend a lot of time building their machines and constantly trying different games. Even playing a full game for the first time requires a huge time investment as the game has to fully install on the hard-drive.

Console gamers simply have to pop it in and start playing so they're not as invested. It's really that simple.

it's not relevant.

Unlike developers who simply license UE3, these guys have full access to all the code and can rip out and change anything they don't like.

Gears 1 maxed out the GPU
Gears 2 maxed out the CPU
Gears 3 will have different design choices (probably with the goal of more "shininess")

The video certainly doesn't give reason to think otherwise.

Gamespot had a side-by-side feature where you can clearly see that buildings and environmental objects were downgraded. For example, a nicely modeled wooden chest in Gears 1 was rendered as a simple box in Gears 2.

Gears 3 will be more of the same. To make some things a bit more shiny they'll downgrade some other things that you're less likely to notice.

Level-5 produced some really good graphics technology on the PS2 but they have failed to impress on the PS3.

It may be pleasant to look at but it's not technically impressive. From a purely technical standpoint, it's not in the same league as games like Uncharted 2, KZ2, or God of War 3.
