If you look closely, the Hero's Shade shield closely resembles the Mirror Shield from Majora's Mask. His sword also resembles Majora's Mask Guilded Sword.
Also Ocarina of Time states that when Hylians get lost in the Lost Woods they turn into Stalfos. The Hero of Time must have gotten lost after the events of Majora's Mask and turned into the Hero's Shade, who looks just like a Stalfos.
