profit margins on hardware for retailers isn't all that much. They also make a higher profit margin selling media for the hardware, the same as the manufacturers do. If you cut out the retailers by selling all the media directly, why are they going to want to sell your hardware??
running around all this time spouting off about 9-10 year life cycles, then they shouldn't be estimating that a PS4 will be out until late 2015 at the earliest. It shows that they are losing faith in their original prediction as to how future proof the PS3 is.
They are sitting back quietly watching their low tech consoles sell at high markups and they are delivering in volume that Sony can't right now. They are going to come out of this generation #2 at the worst and have a a$$load of money to design a really killer system for next time. Both Sony and Microsoft need to be paying close attention to Nintendo right now.
can Sony really afford to be cutting the throats of the retailers that they desperately need to get the PS3 (and Blu Ray movie players) into the hands of consumers by undercutting their prices on games and movies??

Look at the hardware hack in one of the other articles here. Someone devised a way to use a huge external hdd with the PS3 and it works. All those people who will be dumping games and movies with their PS3 will have the means to store large quantities of them, and as soon as someone ports a P2P program, they will be in distribution free for all.
Why do you think they are adding bigger hard drives?? To make the PS3 more useful for all the games and 20GB Blu Ray movies they are about to start pirating.
a 1600x1200 monitor, but that is not a supported resolution on the 360 so I have to use 1280x1024 which is actually slightly better than 720p instead. (It's 4:3 not 16:9, though) I hope they will add support for the higher resolution in a patch, but for the benefit of those that may not know, 720p is 1280x720 and 1080p is 1920x1080, so it really isn't difficult or expensive to get a monitor that is capable of either of those, and most people have one already. the hacker community is reacting to the PS3 in just the way I expected and Sony will not be able to do anything about it. Adding Linux was like taking the lock off the back door.
you can play on a standard computer monitor in 1080p. Can you do that with your PS3?? Most people who play PC games or run apps in high res already have a 1080p capable screen, and most certainly everyone has one capable of 720p so it makes more sense for them from a money perspective to spring for a $40 VGA cable than to spend a few thousand on an HDTV when they may not really care too much about watching TV in HD yet.
