That's just counting physical copies of the Switch version. It's not counting physical copies of the Wii U version or any digital copies. Total copies sold has likely exceeded 5 million, but that's just a guess.
My experience with Demon's Souls was similar. I found it very off putting at first and gave up early on after only defeating 2 or 3 easier bosses. I let it rest in my collection for about a year before revisiting it. Then I realized the greatness of the game's design and ended up playing through to the end.
Third party publishers care about install base, and when Switch's install base gets big enough, third parties will not ignore it, and we'll see much more support. This will happen relatively soon considering how well Switch is selling and how popular it is.
Yeah I'm sure Take 2 and Rockstar hate money so much that they'll never develop and release GTA 6 so it can go on to sell 10's of millions of copies. That's believable.

True. Capcom, Nintendo, Square and Konami were the gaming gods of that generation. Just about all the games I bought that gen were from those publishers.

Since they've now remade Metroid 1 and 2, I think they should do a kick ass remake of Super Metroid with new areas and bosses on Switch.

There's a fairly sizable market out there for whatever is the most powerful console, or most powerful anything for that matter. I think Microsoft will cater to that audience with X1X. They'll end up a healthy 3rd place behind Nintendo and Sony.
2D Metroid is the most likely route Nintendo will go if they even decide to make a new one. Because it would be cheaper and faster to produce than a 3D one.
I view all Souls style games as survival horror.
