"Nintendo has been the best it has ever been."

I explain to you why factually Nintendo isn't the best it's ever been, and your rebuttal is to say the PS3/PS4 won't reach PS2 numbers and that PSVita won't reach PSP numbers. The problem is I never said Sony was the best it's ever been.

"In 2013 globally Nintendo sold the most software and hardware of any game company."

Nintendo doesn't have more fans than ever. Clearly when it comes to the home console market they are as unpopular as they have ever been, and while the 3DS is doing really well it's not going to eclipse the DS or Game Boy. And if you compare the number of iterations of existing IP's to new IP's (especially decently impactful games) it's clear Nintendo is vastly skewed towards existing franchises and not new ones. To say otherwise is wrong.

It's hard to really think of anything that fits the bill. Microsoft doesn't have a huge library of exclusive IP's that would qualify as one of the biggest surprises ever. I mean would a new Chronicles of Riddick game or Crackdown 2 make waves? Not really. So honestly, I'm at a loss as to what it can even be.

Here's the sad truth. Let's say somebody makes a perfectly reasonable and respectful comment on how the Wii U isn't a powerhouse. Let's even assume they go out of their way to state that Nintendo still makes beautiful games and that the Wii U is a good system. There are going to be fanboys and delusional gamers who disagree and reply with inane comments.

Then a flame war starts.

If people weren't so sensitive and were more interested in en...

For people who consider the Wii U to be a last gen console (technicalities aside), then the Wii U is a powerhouse relative to the PS3 and Xbox 360. Well, to a degree.

To the people that feel like the Wii U is current gen, it's just disingenuous to think the Wii U is a powerhouse compared to the Xbox One or PS4.

Another thing to consider is as great as the style is in many Nintendo games, the vast majority of their first party output simply does not push h...

I'll be honest, I'm not entirely sure what Nintendo should do for their home console business. Their audience has shrunk with each home console release ever since the NES. In today's market, is it possible for them to compete in the HD landscape with significantly weaker hardware by selling consoles at a profit (whereas the Wii U is sold at a loss), to me that's a tough sell barring another Wii situation which I think is unlikely.

I don't know if Nintendo ...

No. However, I do think Nintendo needs to strongly evaluate how they plan to position themselves in the industry for the next decade.

Look, I think this article is ridiculous; but Sony has several financially successful branches (including their gaming division) plus they have gotten rid of their main money sinks. Microsoft is one of the biggest companies in the world. Meanwhile, Nintendo is primarily a game development company with two shrinking markets.

If you wanted to argue that Nintendo as a company is less likely to shut down than Microsoft's Xbox division or Sony's PlayStation division then t...

I agree with the premise that a stable framerate is always better than a higher resolution. But, to be fair, Thief's developmental struggles has been well documented. I'm not even slightly surprised at its technical issues.

And how does that matter exactly? What does that have to do with the Wii U becoming the next 3DS? The Wii U is on track to sell something like 15 million consoles with things looking worse rather than better.

There is nothing intellectually dishonest about my point. People try so hard to find reasons to excuse the Wii U's performance instead of acknowledging that in almost every way the Wii U has been a disaster.

The top five doesn't surprise me. I would put Rockstar right there as well. EAD Tokyo also deserves some recognition. They are on fire right now.

I feel like there are two types of people: One are those that think the Wii U can not only turn things around, but can still turn out to be a highly successful console. The second type are those I'd like to call reasonable.

Eh, I think that one is too obvious. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if ND's next game was teased in TLOU with easter eggs, but they've done a good job of hiding it before. The Last of Us hint, as I remember it, was one magazine clipping that wasn't given any attention until the teaser trailer for TLOU first hit.

But who knows. That's one of the cool things about Naughty Dog games.

Hearing what they had to say, it's unlikely that Naughty Dog will do another Jak & Daxter. There come's a point in most fiction series where the pre-established lore and fan expectation just doesn't match with the types of stories you want to tell.

If Naughty Dog wants to tell a gripping but tragic love story with a noir feel do gamers who love want Jak & Daxter want a game that's forced to fit those themes?

Personally I want game deve...

I feel like we have a perfect example: The Indiana Jones trilogy. The second movie was so much darker than the first, and some like the 2nd movie the most; but the general consensus is that Temple of Doom is the weakest of the three primarily because it's dark and strange compared to the pulpy, fun of the first and third film.

I don't think dark is the right tonal fit for the Uncharted series, not as an overarching tone of a game. Maybe a segment or two, but that'...

Ricks and Evie is actually a good archetype, I forgot about those movies.

I will say I don't need to know everything that happened in the past. In a series like this (to me) it's all about forward momentum with enough witty lines of dialog to put together the backstory yourself. I don't need to know why she knew Cutter unless it has a direct correlation to the current game.

And you're right, kids ruin everything.
