Either the Fujitsu, NEC, Commodore, Sega, Panasonic/Sanyo, Apple/Bandai or Casio would have made it.
They all were in the market with their own Console by 94-95. What made Sony pass and all others (including Atari and Sega that were already in the business) fail is debatable.
Only one thing is clear, besides Nintendo and Casio (!) every other Console makers had settle to CD-Rom by that generation.

It also goes to show that people are willing to pay 50/60$ for many hours of gameplay but may be reluctant when they know the game is going to last 6 hours, of course, then there is the multiplayer.
My point is, Valve surely would make more money selling 3 Million copies at 25$ than they do selling 1 Million at 50$.

History thought us that no console reached its limit and stayed on a plateau after a short bit.
PS2 games are still getting better after 10 years and 360 games would if a single 360 remains in working condition in 7 years from now.

Japanese are very protectionists and happen to have 2 major console makers coming from Japan. It is no surprise that software for foreign machines account for less than 3%. As, after buying 2-3 'home' systems, only the hardcore gamers are tempted to buy a Xbox.

Compare PS2 games of 2006 with those of 2000... It does not look like the same console.
