That's just on the tessellation side. It's also going to utilize the much better multi-threading of DX11 and the new Shader Model 5.0 which brings a whole slew of improvements and graphical enhancing goodies. Tessellation will also be used to make the crowds look much better, along with their animations.

Wait for the GT300, then make your decision. GT300 should be even more epic.
Yeah... no, cgoodno. Yes, tessellation is a tiling effect of the geometry. But DX11 cards have tessellation units built into the hardware. So they can increase the polygon count to mass amount with hardly any performance hit. By increasing the detail of the mesh this way, you can create vast landscapes that look unique and highly detailed. You can create perfectly smooth, round or rocky shapes without actually having to create a high polygon model that would take a ton of processing power to ...
@hakis86:
Perhaps you need some glasses man.
Did you look at the flag? First it was a blocky mesh, then with tessellation it became more fluid looking because it was able to have more geometry without much of a performance hit. The same thing is done for the water effects in Dirt 2. And just look at the detail of the mesh in Alien vs Predator. And for Stalker, take a look at his gas mask, it's able to be a perfect circle because of tessellation and the rest of him looks...
Can it run XP?
Then yes.
And you shall :P. Companies are lining up to license the CryEngine 2/3.
And DirectX 11/Windows 7 is getting great reception.
So we have a bright gaming future ahead of us.
Nah, it's running in DX11 mode.
Well Digitimes is a well respected industry reporting website. They don't really write articles.
Well if your not doing 3D modeling & animation, there's no other reason I can think of for needing such a powerful GPU for school..

@Deathrow: Are you doing 3D modeling or animation work by any chance?
Because if you are, it would be MUCH better to get an ATI card equivalent in specs to one of their FireGL/Pro series cards. The drivers can be patched into thinking the Radeon card is a workstation card and it will accelerate your CAD performance around 10x.
Hehe, ya used the video from my Youtube channel :P
It's pretty tight technology called LightStage. They have used it in a number of blockbuster movies such as Spiderman. The actor's sit in this dome of lights, lasers and different types of cameras to scan an extremely high detailed 3D model of the person. Which is then imported into Cinema 2.0. They can then use that model for scenes in a movie for example, where it would be impossible to use an actual person.
It's quit...
It's 2 months till the GT300 dude.. That's not very long. DX11 games won't even be out till December. And mainly 2011. Just buy a cheap card that will tie you over until then, not a top of the line one. Get a GTX 260 (216 shader) or an HD 4850.
@PROFIT: All companies do what Nvidia has done. You have to do it to please investors. AMD would be doing the same thing if they were in this situation and have done it before.
And Microsoft came through in the end with Windows 7. They just throw dirt to give themselves enough time to improve.
A few? Think again:

And it's not much of an upgrade from the 295. So it isn't a big deal.
It only seems like a big deal because Nvidia doesn't have their card out yet to compare too. ATI increased their chip size a good amount for once, thus they got a much better performance increase this time around. Plain and simple.
That's why, as I said in my fi...
That GTX 295 should be more than enough to hold you out until Nvidia releases their GT300 series near the end of November. It's always best to see what both teams are going to be packing in this DX11 generation before rushing into one. Nvidia's GT300 will probably be an epic change, but it might be insanely priced and you'll still go for the 5870. Or it might be fairly priced due to the pressure ATI is putting on it and you'll be glad you waited :P.
Yes, it is an almost double in power. But there's nothing amazing about it. The reason they were able to do this is because they have been making much smaller chips than Nvidia has for quite some time. Now this time they merged 2 of their small chips into a bigger than normal sized one and thus the double power. But still a smaller chip than Nvidia's due to lack of CUDA architecture and a difference in how their SIMD units are designed. As is visible by the fact Nvidia can compete with ATI wh...
Yep. :) Cry all you want Charlie. The damn cards coming this year.
No, it's "taped out".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
If it's running through CUDA, then yes. But ATI isn't locking out ATI. ATI is locking themselves out. They choose not to allow CUDA to run on their GPU's. They refuse. Even though it wouldn't take much work to get running.
