Valve brought a shift in the way games were played. With Half-life, they brought physics and storytelling in-game rather than by cutscene. The first half-life was amazing the way it was handled. After Half-life, many developers started to follow Valve's example.
I'm not sure they are going to have a new engine. They purposely designed Source to be scalable so they wouldn't have to keep creating a new engine every few years.
