We know this price point works for casual gamers, just look at the Wii. Europe and Japan will eat this game up. The 360 can't do casual, the Playstation brand has been doing casual for years. Nice try though, but the PS3 is the only console that touches all ends of the spectrum.
The Xbox360 has huge barriers to break down to replace Sony as the mainstream console. It is still entirely possible that most people buying Xbox360's are past owners.

They force Sony to atleast drop price to $349 for 40gb. Its just putting the PS3 closer and closer to that mainstream price point. It will have a larger increase for Sony than Microsoft.
If the PS3 is already outselling MSFT I dont think a price cut will save them. They need more software exclusives like Halo 3, and unfortunately all those big exclusives remain with Sony.

And also, if your just counting making money off consoles, you do know that the PS2 and PSP are still around right? Its not like those consoles have disappeared. They still make money off of both of those, so it will balance out fairly shortly.

I dont think they will drop the 80gb price however. They will probably bundle 2 games with it, and maybe an extra controller.

Just because in game XMB is a more important feature doesnt mean this feature isnt cool. No need to find your controller, get up and use the controller when you want to listen to music and watch videos? Whats wrong with that.

Also, dont forget that the PS3 was outselling the 360 WW until Halo was released. With no Halo, and PS3 with a better line up period by the end of the year, the Xbox doesnt stand a chance.

I think it comes down to this. As of now, PS3 and 360 are about equal. PS3 better media device, 360 better games and XBL.
So if you go to the store, PS3 is the better item, but then you say.
"Hey, the 360 has same games, plus more games, XBL, and is $100 cheaper."
It also comes with two games.

Because if you look at Call of Duty 4, theres no messaging or friends invites. That was all supposed to be done with the in-game XMB.
It does allow you to see who is online or not, so I suspect Sony was just getting the final kinks out, possibly with in game music. this looks promising though
Theres no way to tell if this is real or not, especially by saying the settings option is there. It doesnt mean the WHOLE settings band is there, and you cant telll if the music stops when your in the settings part.
But it may give you the option to change from 1080p to 720p (dunno why) and possibly let you change super-white, full RGB etc.
