Microsoft didn't lose confidence, consumers did, MS acted accordingly.
I might add it seems the only ones upset about the news are Sony fans. Why are they so insecure with their PS4? They never intended to buy an XB1 even without the Kinect. I also bet most of the complainers have never used the XB1 for an extended period of time.
After the Kinect unbundling I have about 250 Facebook Friends that plan on buying an X1. They have friends as well that plan on doing the same.
I think it will make a very big difference.
They need a little more than one game. I am rooting for them though.
A Pokemon MMO with a compelling online community feature set including chat, video, streaming etc would be huge.
Microsoft is using the same playbook from the X360 days, which I might add were heavily copied by a company who shall remain nameless.
Their market research indicated people liked Kinect. Kinect sold 8 million in just the states and 50 million worldwide. Sometimes that research can provide an accurate picture of consumer perception of a product but sometimes it does not. Market research also indicated nobody used the start menu anymore, and when MS removed it in Windows 8 there was a ton of backlash.

Xbox One still has it's own exclusives and additional non-gaming and in-gaming functionality that PS4 does not have.

It's a game console that is slightly less powerful but one that offers the Xbox experience meaning:
Exclusive Microsoft IPs and 2nd Party titles: Halo, Gears, Forza, Kinect Sports, Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive, Alan Wake, Ryse, etc etc.
Exclusive 3rd Party games: Titanfall.
It's Multi-tasking, Snap, Universal Apps, Skype, TV integration, Quick Switching.

For the Sony PS Nation, it means being angry that Microsoft did what Xbox fans asked them to do.
Sony still has yet to recover from the losses upon losses caused by development of the PS3.
Why do some of you act so dense? From a dev level, SDK could be updated that disable Kinect completely. For us consumers, depending on the game, additional power could be utilized at a software level by disabling Kinect. Microsoft could also just simply reduce the background processing footprint that Kinect utilizes and have it increase to some level once initiated for use by the user.
And Halo 4 outsold all of them.....
