It wasn't just the PS2 parts that were removed, but many PS3 parts were merged into one. In addition, the smaller manufacturing process going from 90nm to 65nm also makes the GPU and CPU significantly smaller.

As a salesman, you should also know that the retailer will push whatever makes them the most money within their inventory. Console is not where the money is at, but rather games and accessories. Dropping $200 on a console makes it a little easier to drop a little more money on used games and accessories (most profitable items).
Retailers reportedly make almost nothing on consoles. Sony's PS3 is at the higher price level, not because Sony is greedy (at the mo...
If there is one feature that I feel is missing from my "top of the line" piece of hardware, it is backwards compatiblity with PS2. There are so many games I would like to play from the PS2 era, but can't and I refuse to pay $130 for a PS2.
I shouldn't have to! I already paid $600+ to Sony.
To be fair, the HD-DVD player sales weren't that great considering it was a fairly cheap (at the time) add-on. I couldn't care less about HD-DVD and only bought one because it cost me $20 with 6 movies!
I own 1 Blu-Ray movie and that is "Enter the Dragon", because Bruce Lee kicks ass! So do I care about Blu-Ray? Not really. I want games and more games. If I want Blu-Ray and didn't have a PS3, I would buy a PS3 or a standalone player for $200. Sure Blu-Ray movies look ...
In all fairness, MS had a few barriers to entry for online:
- Market, MS market is for the younger crowd (potentially 10-15 year olds) that don't know much about online setup
- Cheaper console also means attraction of the less high end market (Sony's age range is 30+)
- No wireless built in capability without an expensive add-on
- Stigma of being a paid service (how often do you get people asking, is Xbox Live free?)
With all fairness, a free...
@kushan,
I must agree wholeheartedly. However, I hate it when console manufacturers upgrade hardware features. Traditionally there has been one spec, but then Sony started with the slim models removing featuers as well as Nintendo Gamecube.
----------------------------- ---------------
This is capable on the Xbox as well, as long as games can meet that 60fps and 1080p specs. There aren't too many games that meet this demanding requirement even on the might...

Once could also say, Sony released LBP right before Gears 2 so they must be scared of Gears.... I would also like to point out that they are different genre games all togheter, so it might not have anything to do at all.
So stop reading the latest pro Sony (or MS) blog and rehash it here as truths. If you firmly believe KZ2 w...
hmmm...
I don't need all the features Sony wants to shove down my throat and steal my money. I want GAMES! Let me repeat GAMES and gaming features! It isn't valuable unless I need and use it.
Right now, the 360 is still MY pick in the game department. When Sony picks up and releases more games I like, I will buy more games and use it more. I don't need them to TELL me how great of a value the PS3 is, SHOW ME!!!
So until then, PS3 is collecting dust...
This is a though one, considering the crazy hype around this game. If it doesn't live up to the expectations, it will probably burn and die. Once you get a high expectation and it doesn't exceed it, no matter how close it was, it will be deemed a failure. That is the danger of overhyping a game.
With that said, reports are good on this game, but I stil don't think a franchise like MGS will easily be beaten by a sequel to what was considered a mediocre game. MGS4 came when the P...
I could spin that around and say, MS being the newest kid on the block and being able to catch up with the big boy Sony is doing great. The gap is widening!
Reality is that MS is weak in Europe and even weaker (or should I say practically dead) in Japan. We don't get any official numbers like NPD for Europe, but they are making strides over there.

The console that used to get the least playtime was my PS3, but it is now the Wii. PS3 finally got a decent game library and the Wii, well it has a craptacular game library except for Zack and Wiki, Metal Slug Anthology....
What makes you think that I know nothing about PC Gaming? Mister self proclaimed expert!

For those others that misinterpreted my comment, I was exaggerating and talking about prices over time. It wasn't too long ago, maybe 18 months, that quality RAM cost $200 and more for 4GB. Many gamers buy the latest and greatest. Many of them don't mind the price tag as long as it gives them the biggest e...
I guess for PC gamers that are used to spend $200 on RAM every quarter, it is an easy choice to fork over the money. For me, it is an easier choice, I'm keeping my money at $180 for games for the rest of the year (or maybe part of the year).
That price is insane! Don't forget to add the cost of a nice keyboard and mice...
PS3 is awesome and have many more quality games than the 360.
I think the notion of future proofing a console (or most computer hardware) is ridiculous. Computer processing power moves so fast that I could care less about performance I can't see in the immediate future. Why? Because time and time again, paying for unused processing power (in this case theoretical so far) has never paid off. Technology moves so fast that the money I save up front can buy more than the "future proofed" technology of today tomorrow.
I would rather ...
From what I can tell, mint royal, makes perfect sense and oner sounds like a Sony fanboy. However, if you look at the number of disagrees the majority is disagreeing with mint royal.
My observation from this site is that there are far more Sony fanboy's here. Time and time again, I see this develop. Perhaps, the reason why we keep hearing the outcry of why this site is so pro MS, is because mostly consist of Sony fanboys....
Just look at the disagrees above for ...
I'm sorry to all the fanboys here, but there is no conspiracy to bury the PS3. I think a lot of the negative "news" about PS3/Blu-Ray is just peoples sentiment about it right now.
If you are a fanboy and already bought the console, rest assured that there will be games that will come out on all 3 consoles. You made a choice, now go play games instead of ranting about the negative news. It happens on both sides of the coins, and Sony just happens to be in the target r...
One can also say that Sony lack the foresight to protect their investment and MS made some very smart business moves. I think the funniest part is MS received their chip 6 weeks prior to Sony. This mirrors the PS3 so far, delays after delays with release of PS3 and then Home.
Sounds like Sony has great ideas, but don't execute well. I'm interrested in reading this book, just to see how the story went about.
I would say a decrease in sale on a lower price console, a sinking ship, when your two competitors are increasing from the same month last year. This is for one of the biggest sale season in the year. That is a worrisome sign, but granted that is so far only reported by NPD in the US.
I don't think Blu-Ray will continue to help the PS3, as standalone players are getting significantly cheaper. As more time goes by and MS is widening the gap (assuming current trends continue), t...
Normally, I would say that Sony and MS will try and up each other. Especially when Sony saw how MS pulled ahead due to the extra year. However, Sony's situation doesn't allow them to introduce a new system due to the non-existant profit margin on their console even years out. Why? Because, by the time Sony drops their price competitively, MS will lower it again.
Finally, MS will be forced to introduce a new console to counter Sony's better value machine. This of course assumes...
