Based on your quote and statement, there is nothing indicating a loss on each 360 unit sold. A decrease in revenue doesn't mean a decrease in profit let alone a decrease in profit per unit sold. Even worse is when the revenue includes multiple sources of sale for both PC and 360.
There is a lot of mixed signals in the data, but all things considered Xbox division (E&D) came away pretty unscathed.
I guess MS have a year on year increase in console unit sales, but not quarterly...... A positive income is more than any business can really ask for unless you are Nintendo that is raking in money even with an expected decline in profit.

A number of years back I wrote a ray-tracer too. It was fun to see your stuff rendered, but it took forever even with optimizations and simple objects with few light sources.

Yeah, but for the year 2009 it was a total profit of $169 million for Entertainment and Device Division (which includes a lot more than just the Xbox Division). They lost almost as much in one quarter as they gained in the whole year though....
MS had a link somewhere (I don't remember) showing silverlight technology streaming HD video with stats directly to your PC. It is all but confirmed that this is the same stuff powering the 360.
From what I saw it is works extremely well at adapting bitrate to adjust for bandwidth in real time.
a) well, instant 1080p is suppose to bridge that gap albeit it will probably still have lower PQ than BR. From what I have seen though, this new streaming technology works really well and miles better than what I have seen so far.
b) well, you are talking about the lowest priced blu-ray players, but by the time a new BR player from MS arrives, a quality one probably could be had for around $100. I would rather have a stand-alone player than having it chained to my 360.
I agree with you for the most part as I'm a proponent of physical disc. However, many of your points can be applied in both cases, digital download and disc based.

You, I always thought that disc based system will be around for ever and that consumers what physical goods. Then just about a month ago I spoke to my brother, whom is about 10 years younger than me and he actually preferred his games in digital download format.
He cited:
a) no need to swap discs EVER
b) can't loose my discs
c) no discs, means no scratched or damaged discs
d) license is held with Sony and there might be some benefits (like Steam or ...

It's pretty clear that streaming isn't going to beat blu-ray in quality, but if history has a say the most advanced format seems to loose quite frequently.
Personally, I prefer to own the media, but it seems the youngsters (ahhh that makes me sound sooo old) these days love digital content.

Nobody is complaining about PSN being free. It is an issue of how PSN (or Home) can be so much better with little effort. If PSN was sooo good, then why are still the majority of Xbox Live active accounts still Gold members. I would expect a mass exodus!
