What I wonder is, it takes quite a while to fill-up that memory when streaming from a bluray.
Let's say the game assets cost 4GB, which is more than plenty, 3GB would be used for game logic and dynamically generated elements.. It would take 150 seconds just to load up that 4GB from 6x bluray, 40seconds to load up from a speedy harddisk.
Developers will have to find clever ways around that, if they want to keep to PS4's immediate response / instant rea...
InTheLab, I understand your point, that said the analogue stick on a single move would provide basic navigation while you are not swinging the move (like going to a place in the game level, without resorting to an on-rails solution). Then you could start swinging it as much as you like. It would work perfectly. You would not need the navigator, so the dual move pack would allow double player casual games that are NOT on rails even for those who bought the basic pack.
As for h...
Sony's great mistake was not adding an analogue stick on the move, and it should have been sold in double packs, ditching that navigator without any motion capability. Move applications would have been much broader.
@Ingram: Frame interpolation on high end TV's do add intermediary and otherwise non-existent frames. The TV's do so by analyzing 2 frames and try to check what pixels have moved where, and they do it at an outstanding pace. Please examine Sony's MotionFlow, LG's Trumotion, and Samsung's Movie plus (samsung may have changed the name in newer models, tho.)
Nevertheless, this sort of post-process means that the TV set has to wait for the second frame to start...
NaiNaiNai: PS3's biggest bottleneck was separated memory pool, and Nvidia's RSX who screwed Sony and didn't provide unified shader architecture. The CPU had to assist the GPU, and in a separated memory pool this wasn't entirely feasible.
Now with the GPU CPU sharing the same memory space, the GPU will assist the CPU in a way PC GPU's can't, tasks that PC's have to do using the CPU to avoid data transfer over the PCI-express don't pose a threat ...
It is about preference indeed, but I'd prefer 720p60fps over 1080p30fps if I had to choose. I HOPE games will let me choose between the two, but I don't think consoles would let me do that.
Agreed.
No PC for a good while will have unified GDDR5 speed Ram pool. The CPU and GPU will continue to access different Ram pools, and reading from the "far" pool will always be slower.
What does the unified Ram pool provide? On top of what NeoGaf user .nimrod mentions, you will be able to have GPU particles that affect gameplay and game logic, not just extra eyecandy that we see on current titles. These will be mostly be utilized on exclusive titl...
I don't think the video is meant to make us see how beautiful 4K is or verify that the display is indeed 4K, it is accompanies the fact that there is a 4K display running. I think it is just boring to say they demoed a 4K TV in plain text.
I'm guessing for at least 4-5 years Ps3 will be very active.
I haven't read the detailed report but Sony losses may be due to massive R&D required for PS4?
edit: I've just read it and total R&D costs including every division fell from about 500 billion yens to 430 billion yens. Still a lot of money!
I hope I don't have to log in to Home to view the event. That was a total waste of money for Sony, btw. ...unless of course they are making money out of it.
I've said it and will say again, the fact that Wii U is close to current gen is good both for the current gen and the next gen. Wii U won't be able to hamper next gen development just like Wii could not hurt PS3 and Xbox360 development because there was a big gap between the consoles. If it was halfway between, there was this danger that it could be the deciding factor in game design in multiplatform games. Now WiiU will be treated like a PS3 or Xbox360 for multiplats.
@Neonridr: I'm very sure WiiU will produce good visuals, but I think a console which launches 6 years after the current gen consoles should be producing better visuals solely with its raw power, and shouldn't have needed extra special care to just look about the same or slightly better. Nintendo went with the cheap route, and it shows. But I think it is OK to have it roughly the same as current gen, as devs won't have to tier their assets with respect to Wii U, their PS3/Xbox asse...
I think it is not something that is as simple as letting them make the first move, as if they can react to it and make big changes, they can't, at this point. I think they will roll it out as soon as possible.
Why couldn't we have a universal PSN? Why couldn't they make it like Steam? Steam does provide regional differences (Special versions for Germany, some games not available in some countries etc. etc.) but the whole thing is unified and universal. This segmentation does not help Sony. It does however boost the number of PSN users for showing to stockholders, but it probably reduces revenue per user and even the overall revenue, because it is made increasingly difficult for me to buy an...
Being used to a controller is different from it being the perfect controller. I am really used to DS3 as I was always a PS gamer, but when I took an Xbox360 controller, it felt incredibly well, fitting my hand, although I'm not keen on the asymmetric design.
You can't debunk a rumour with another rumour, unless you were joking :)
I chose console gaming when I realized I don't like to play 30 cm away from a display, although it provided higher resolution. I find 42 inch TV's at about 2 meters very immersive compared to looking at a monitor.
@darkride66: It may not be exactly like charging for things that the user already bought: There may be costs associated with royalties for DVD and Bluray playback, and Microsoft may be transferring the cost to the enduser and only for people who'd like the feature. It somehow makes sense.
I hope at least some games on PS4 can support this, just wishful thinking. But I think Sony has a 3d glass of its own although without VR capabilities (no head tracking etc.) so I don't know how they feel like it.
