Go download a 720p sample movie. Would you complain if games looked as good as 720p movies? I thought so. 720p is not something to write off, when there's adequate anti-aliasing.
Of course, I'd choose 1080p30fps over 720p30fps, but when you add double the amount of frames, I'd always go for 720p60fps, for any type of game, including casual games.
The second screen is a wonderful idea, and I really like the fact that they opened this up for every android phone / tablet, not just vita. I have an el-cheapo android phone and there I'm glad to know that I'll be able to use it with PS4.
The title is misleading. Enlighten is a multiplatform tech already used on PS3, Xbox, PC, and now tablets. It is a multiplatform tech, but the title makes me think the page is trying to capitalize on the PS4 wind.
Until companies can get away charging 30+ dollars for mobile games, I don't think smart-phone gaming will become hard-core. That audience is different, would not pay more than a few quids for games. Smart-phone games will keep on being bite-sized for the most part, and the performance segmentation is too big to use the extra "powah" that these new phones sport.
What a load of bullcrap.
I haven't bought it, and I'm not going to.
The game can have online enhancements, but when it cannot connect to a server, it throws you out of the game and I've read people lose their progress. What it should do is to keep a local save and sync with the cloud whenever possible and update your game state in the cloud. But don't make people lose their level because your shitty servers can't handle it.
Nvidia doesn't own an X86 license, so any solution they provide would require a separate GPU from a separate provider. Thanks to AMD, we have CPU-GPU (APU) with unified access to RAM.
Also, NVidia screwed Sony with RSX. As a PS fan, that was my opinion from the beginning of PS3 era, not because Sony now chose AMD :)
I'm really excited to see what Hideo is planning for PS4. Since every PS4 will be equipped with a camera, and Kojima likes to break the 4th wall, you know.. Wonder how he'll integrate that as a joke in his game(s). He'll know where we are in the room, at least precisely the controller.
I like realtime cutscenes, like MGS's, where you can even play around a little with the cam. Not only your character carries in game acquired traits (costume, weapon, wound, dirt etc.) but also it increases the wow factor to see the graphics are real-time.
“It’s about time. We’ve built games optimised for mid-ranged PCs and sold them at $30. Now we can charge double that for the same product. It’s exciting times.”
It took a while for me to understand this was all satire :)
Those on the "knowing how the console looks does matter, why didn't they show it?" camp:
How it looks may matter WHEN you are buying. How it looks doesn't matter 10 months before you buy it. However, knowing about the capabilities and services is much more important, because:
When you look at the shape of a console, it tells you NOTHING about the capabilities and services it provides. And the shape of it is something that you'll be treat...
I have no doubt that the anticipation for PS4 is high, but the current statistics Shopto.net providing does not accurately represent the demand, because as far as I know they are the only place that take pre-orders now (Amazon's page is not exactly a pre-order page) so that will inflate their results to be compared to previous console launches (in their 7 year history) where the console might be pre-ordered elsewhere.
Uncharted is a cinematic experience, although some game mechanics are similar. Let Uncharted be Uncharted and Tomb Raider be Tomb Raider.
An easter egg would be super cool.
It was mentioned by other developers that Sony did not spill all its beans... I think GDC and E3 will be really fertile with new information.
Fox Engine will only provide the visuals. They need to make the gameplay very solid to be still competitive, so Fox Engine is not a be-all end-all solution to PES's future.
A friend of mine bought FIFA. He couldn't play it on his first day (single player). He downloaded the cracked torrent version later on.
Steam rocks. Its default DRM, unless enforced othwerwise by the publisher, has an offline mode. It is DRM, but the best of its kind. Again, by default, it lets you install games on unlimited number of systems, again, if the stupid publisher doesn't ask otherwise.
Steam doesn't require you to be online all the time, it doesn't boot you out of games if you are not online.
@colonel179: The processing will be handled by other chips, not the RAM. The 8GB GDDR5 will be the only ram available on the PS4 for all these tasks, but there will probably be a small amount of Flash ROM for BIOS. Those tasks will need quite a bit of memory, and it would be illogical for them to have their own RAM, as the PS3 has massive amount of RAM anyway.
I am expecting they will reserve 1GB for the OS in the beginning to be on the safe side, launch titles won't prob...
From Wikipedia
"GDDR5 (Graphics Double Data Rate, version 5) SDRAM is a type of high performance DRAM graphics card memory designed for computer applications requiring high bandwidth."
SDRAM -> Synchronous dynamic RANDOM-ACCESS memory.
So GDDR5 is a type of RAM.
*Double facepalm*
*60fps.
That's double the amount of spatial information for your eyes.
