I'm not neccessarily saying it is bad, however, it can be bad for lasting appeal to those games that don't live up to the hype or expectations though. Then, you start to see the jaded articles/blogs of those hyped up games, with overly critical reviews, which in turn can hurt sales.
Sony themselves have actually been pretty good about not cramming every detail down our throats on 1st party games... companies like EA, Activision, and Ubisoft are right the biggest offe...
I think this author is missing the definition of "rental." A rental and pricing structure is not meant for a player to go through completely of a game, it's to entice you to experience it then go out and buy it. I remember renting FFVII, FFIII, super metroid, full well knowing I'm not going to get through entire game in a week, but it would build hype to save money to go out purchase it later.
That being said, I do hope the subscription based pricing is m...
Hype sells, I mean look at what TitanFall and Watchdogs did with hype for new IPs. Destiny will be the same way. New IPs need the media exposure (or over exposure) to really sell, these publishers can't afford for these games to struggle out of the gate because no one knows about them. I for one, like the organic experience of buying a game not really knowing much about what it's about and the experience of being blown away... sadly with AAA releases I think those days are over.
@HollywoodLA and yet they're still around and have enough money to have losses for the next 38 years shocking! It must just tear your up 16 year old heart out to know that...
I think they a study back in 2012 that Mario itself as an intellectual property was worth 10 billion. It's kinda of ridiculous video game entity could be worth so much... This industry has come a long way since the Atari days
Why wouldn't they? You honestly think they're brand loyatly goes beyond getting something that acutally works?
High end pcs? Well now you're talking crazy!
All kidding aside majority of gamers do own multiple consoles, in early 2012 it was around 56% own multiple consoles and i'm that only has increased as consoles got cheaper. Obviously not everyone's earning potential is the same, but I for one will find anyway possible to own any system that has great games.
@Eonjay no worries, I think my point may have been misleading, a system or systems does not make a person...
"But for me and everyone I know that are boring..." fixed.
I'm sure there is a generation of gamers out there that grew up on the PS2 and there's nothing outside of Playstation, I get that. However, I honestly believe those of us that grew up with the NES are more open to owning multiple consoles/handhelds. So everything and everyone is in the discussion.
I'm sure Phil has a Wii U and PS4 sitting alongside his Xbox 1 and genuinely wants to play every great game, like a real gamer.
No more than anyone would ever get tired of playing a Halo, Uncharted, or a FIFA. A good fun game is always welcome no matter the series or characters used.
@HollywoodLA I love how you've conveniently backed away from quality (reviews) argument and have reverted to sales... lets look at those exclusive game sales numbers shall we, given roughly the same release window(s):
Killzone vs Mario 3dWorld: 1.73 vs 2.10 million (shocking you were wrong)
Knack vs Wind Waker: 1.03 vs 0.97 (japan included knack in their PS4 release bundle)
Infamous vs Mario Kart 8: 1.39 vs 1.26 (Mario kart released 4 wee...
Wait Zelda is platformer? Pikmin? Mario Kart? You've played the Order? And no one is talking about sales numbers but about "critical ratings" which Nintendo is winning (so far). When's the last time you've played a platformer, Flappybird that's seems about your type of skill level.
I think that's the problem though, if Sony was in charge of the pricing I think the model would be more attractive. Too many of these publishers want to rip people off from these service it seems. I think Sony's hands are tied though, I'm sure they'd like to do a more favorable pricing scheme, but have to keep those 3rd parties happy in order to have decent content.
@hollywoodLA and you have no prove that it was not a demo when you claimed that was fact... "you're wasting my time with every new response." and yet you responded... can't be that bored all alone I guess.
It must be hard trying to covey an educated comment with only one bubble...
@HollywoodLA I'm pretty sure he answered your question. How can you claim for a "fact" that it was "not" demoed? where you there? do "you" have sources?
Please name me the last Nintendo made game (not a tech demo) that was shown then later revealed to not be close to the final product? Didn't think so... swing and a miss.
"Lower the price" and " throw in a second game tablet" ... Why don't they just give the Wii u away for free? Do we not understand the concept of profit vs loss?
They would need to release several online-centric titles that are essentially flawless before I would ever believe any "lesson is learned" talk. Fact of the matter is, a title(s) as big as BF aren't going to miss the holiday release window flawed or not.
@hollywoodLA you're missing my point, if you're not interested in the game and saying it will bomb, why are you here? I don't think there's a single person here who would claim the game is going to sell like a GTA or a Mario Kart, but there are still plenty of people wanting to try it out.
It's a great idea... however I don't believe Sony has much control over pricing, I'm pretty sure the publishers are setting those prices.
