Besides what Nitrowolf2 said, those were the time the interwebz werent as spread as today. The marketing wasnt as viral - or downright fanboyish - as today. We sat and talked about games and how amazing they were. I simply dont remeber the fanboy clains we have today about who sold best and who didnt ever coming up in the conversation. And I sat to talk with friends a lot in those years.

Nintendo is the most likely to launch the next gen first, since its tech is the oldest, and they did make more money than MS and Sony together this gen. AS for the article....to me is just a rumor, but who knows...

a market somewhat near my apartment were they already have copies of the X360 going out...I've played a few mins and, since Im not used to the X360 pad.....I sux at it..it seemed interesting, but whatever...not my genre and so good luck to those that enjoy the fps/tps shooting.
Only 4-5 studios were lauching for both platforms , and only 2 were exclusive to HD-DVD and rest..hum...about 6-10 studios were BD exclusive....yeah, money did speak louder. HD-DVD lauched first, did have some months prior to BD and look where it got in the end...
when it doesnt happen to you. I saw it happening right in front of me. My friend treated the thing like it was a son (it took him a good 6 months to buy it - we work and have taxes to pay kids, its not mommy bough or anything like it - and the RRoD was becoming legendary by then). He went apeshit when it happend...the rest of us nearly bust a casket laughing but he was inconsolable..we went to a pub to get HIM smashed...hes a funny drunk.

X360 was something new and great to play....then the RRoD beggan...I've saw friends, that were the braggers of our pack, crying like little girl (it was absurdly expensive to us here, and it was not easy to get it fixed here at that time...). I even went to see the defunct consoles be destroyed in epic rage fits. Some of those friends managed to buy another units...just to happen again, and then a third time. That was the final line. as much as I see Kinect being just a very forcefull PR stunt to keep its gaming division alive, MS knows it will sell. HEck, we all know it will sell, at least in the very begining.
