Carmack and his comments....to me its just another dev asking for more horsepower to trow in a lazy a** code on it and say its all they could do....Thats PC gaming code for you. The more horsepower under the hood, the less the devs have to work to make it beautifull to the eyes...and then you spend the first 2-3 months out of the gates patching the hell out of it...console games are doing it too so no complains there...ok then John, lets see that PS3 coding wonder of yours...after 6 years and...
PRICE!PRICE!PRICE!PRICE!PRICE! PRICE!PRICE!PRICE!PRICE!PRICE!. ....
That answer your question quite easily. If not the price, it would have bombed oh so hard.....can ANYONE imagine Wii selling at 300USD+?
The first year numbers go to the hardcore, the people that are WILLING to spend such dough for the tech.
Does Nintendo still have people willing to pay more than 250USD for a console we dont know the specs? That is rumored to be barelly superior than its 6 year olds+ competitors? Thats what we're gonna see.
Will the casuals eat it? PRICE is the name of the game......
Its so easy to do a cheap a** code and then say the current generation cannot run it properly(guess what happend with the first Crysis). Crytek has shody development tools, their code is uterly unrefined, resourse hogging bastard as it is, and they want everyone to believe their engine tops everyone else....only when the system has the resourses to eat it(and even then it may crash...), if not, it isnt next gen enough for them... Well, I'll believe it when I see it.
@MrBurn
for what you're currently paying, I wouldnt even get your 30MB/s here in Brazil(conversion rates and all that).....
There WILL be a PS4, maybe a PS5, but from then on....ISPs around the world ARE NOT READY to the kind of speed/quality it would be needed to stream huge quantities of information the next 2-3 gen of gaming will be pushing. And if they are, its only in a very few countries. A company that want to profit in the billions would be STUPID to let go of 90% of its possible customers....this Gaikai thing is/may be a beginning of what's to come, but just that IMO.
Miyamoto isnt a GOD, you know. He is just a human, entitled to his opinion, but he does work for the other company, so it isnt possible to believe he isnt unbiased at all.
What was he saying when the 3DS was bombing hard before NIntendo had to cut the price to have some demand??? Yeah...look what I did.
ONLY console to EVER be priced beyond 500USD and SURVIVE to see its 60 million units sold (lets not talk about even pushing beyond the 1 million barrier at all....) and you want to say people are fanboys because they're happy the PS3 did manage to reach where it is? Ok...Then lets not talk about all the FUD campaing by the media, the WORLD WIDE RECESSION, the better competition against 2 WAY CHEAPER consoles, one with good add campaing and the other with HUGE add campaing...yeah...its fan...
Well, lets see...if they still use a CELL developed processor, they can use a cheaper and yet better version, for the last version in development was already far better than the current one being used on the PS3, a way more refined production cost effective unit also...lets just remember that Sony bough the plant where these babies are made a few years back...its way cheaper now to manufacture them. Thats point 1.
Point 2: all the development tools, all the graphic engines, ...
When the PS3 was launched, with 2x drives, yes, BR had low speed rates in comparison with DVDs WHEN the DVD drive was at full 12x. But since that doesnt happens ALL the times, it was a fair trade, for BD drives read ALWAYS at the same, CONSTANT, speed.
Nowadays there are up to 12x BD drives....thats so much more read info speed than DVDs it hurts....
People going nuts over rumors....thats what I call desperation for easy fanboy hits.
Nintendo is really the one that will have work to do. People that think that the install base that it gained with Wii will be translated to the Wii U is either fanboy or delusional. Its a 50/50 chance. The casuals will have to be driven to it by a strong add campaign, as their motto is the less we pay the most we play. The hardcore Nintendo fans will have a better life with the Wii U, at least its what I expect, but its network will have a lot of growing up and development to do. Good luck to...
While I do agree that the companies are trying to make as much money as they can, we have to understand that each country has its own tax's laws that make the price go even further up....So, its not ONLY the industry, but the governments of these countries being their greedy selves.
Here in Brazil, for example, gaming devices have absurd taxes imbued in their final prices, so much that when launched he price goes up to 10x the final price already converted in BR Real. Th...
"Sony is giving us multiple iterations of God of War, Resistance, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank.." TOO.
Tere, i made it right. While you have a point, there is no doubt that Sony is the only one in the big tree that went as far as they did with new IPs this gen.
And i like to see how some dont seen to think at all...not all countries have the bandwith to make digital distribution feasible for the masses...if MS wants to sell to a few, elite with money and access to high speeds, and let the huge masses go to the others, then be my guest...
Digital distribution may be the future, but it simply isnt the present....to the masses at least.
GLOBALLY, PS3 outsells X360 easilly...one the few instances where this doesnt happens is when its the hollydays season on US (all those promos...not all of the other countries can keep such promos as US and their blackfridays type promos...)...Maybe thats why PS3 outseels X360 and you keep seing it upfront on these chartz...
And keep in mind: VGchartz is generally WRONG on their chartz...filled to the brim ith BS numbers.
The only thing these tablets/smartphones bring to the gaming table is the battery, IMO. As in: thanks to these things they are developing BETTER batteries that can be used in gaming portable devices.
As a gaming device, the Iwhatever is worthless (specially at the prices practiced by Apple...and people buy these things in throves...every freaking year!) IMO. Touchscreen is nice for niche/casual games but for real games that demmand precise control, they're pathetic at bes...
Hey Peter, when the tech for mind imaging(game inside your mind)/hollodeck(you inside game) comes foward you can try and say this again......
And my OPINION matters to you guys how? As much as YOURS matters to me.
The fact that I've actually read the article, and that I DO KNOW FOR A FACT that there are developers out there that ENJOY a CHALLENGE but cannot put out the TIME (time is money...) in it because of the global economy (and other pressures as the publishers like you said) matters more to me than whatever you are assuming I did or didnt.
