Because it has business ramifications. The planning process for when a software and hardware is released doesn't exist in a vacuum.
Dota 2 will be FTP, and it's a MOBA RTS game. Not exactly the same.
It's not about being able to "stand up" against Call of Duty, it's about maximizing your sales. If two big-name properties in the same genre launch on the same day, a good chunk of people are going to choose one over the other.
The gaming industry isn't the only industry that works like this. Movie studios constantly change release dates based on competition in the same genre.
They haven't decided to go up against Call of Duty. Activision hasn't set a release date, or even announced Black Ops 2.
I imagine that since they're launching on November 6, Activision won't be launching Black Ops 2 on the same day -- it's bad for both companies.
enfestid wonders why DarkSniper is speaking in third-person. Does DarkSniper know something enfestid does not? enfestid can't figure out the purpose of speaking like this.
You read my mind. This isn't "inside" GameStop's used games business. This is simply speculation, common knowledge, and opinion.
Horrible article, no matter how you feel about the used game business.
I much preferred the image they've been using as part of the press release:

I don't really care for this box art, personally.
Sorry, but how many times has Peter overpromised and underdelivered? Why should I trust him when he says it's fantastic?
He's never even described what the gameplay was like. That's a pretty glaring omission.
Why is this always the response when a female celebrity says she likes gaming? Even when the Captain America game came out and Chris Evans said he hated games, people claimed Hayley Atwell was being paid to say she liked casual games.
Seriously, guys: women play games, too. It's not shocking news. It happens.
At everyone whining: OK, you go get me a known multiplatform developer to corroborate what you're saying. While I may have misspoke in saying it's "not possible," it would be far more difficult to implement via traditional microphones. It would require more development and money, which isn't much of an option.
But, hey... I bet BioWare and Bethesda are totally full of it. They're clearly lying.
Quoting my previous post above: Not possible via traditional mics. Kinect handles the voice recognition. This has been discussed many times on N4G.

Edit: First article I found that explains why -- http://uk.kotaku.com/581013...
That's what she said.
(I don't care if I get disagreed into oblivion... it was worth it.)
Co-sign. The story was much better than the first. There were some weak moments (especially in regards to how they chose to tell said story), but overall it was good.
A. They've already said it will be PC-exclusive.
B. Well, of course they like making money and will continue making games for tablets and smartphones. Why wouldn't they?
Because they're so known for not pushing graphical boundaries, right?
No, I've played against that guy before... he's a jerkoff. He gets squads and finds the easiest ways to exploit the points system in the game, ruining it for others.
He's surprisingly bad at the game, though.
@Ghost250: It's not a new IP, no, but completely revamping the style of a major IP is taking just as big of a risk as releasing a new IP.
Pretty sure the quarter that includes Diablo III wins by default.
The problem is it's not only Microsoft seeing poor sales -- it's the entire console market. If it were just Microsoft, a price cut would be obvious. As it stands, it seems 50-50, but if I had to guess, we'll see one before the holiday season.
