Yeah, if only people knew how reviewers come up with these numbers (hint, they make them up on the spot without consistency) then maybe gamers would be a tad smarter and read the review instead of look at the score.
It's the current mentality that anything lower than a 9 is a flop, which of course isn't true. But Eurogamer has been known to take some pretty big titles and toss 8's at them, when many people disagree. They seem to low ball it.
Man... I'd love to see a variation of this.

Oh you're speaking to a life long fan of UT2004... and I felt UT3 just lacked any kind of flair. It felt like a step back, sadly. Maybe CoD4 opened my eyes to having some sort of goal or progressive system to make you want to play comeptitive more, but I feel UT has fallen apart in recent years and its pains me. The gameplay core used to be great... if they could update the interface and give it some sort of progressive leveling up, it could take the crown back.
Perhaps you can tell me then, the exact difference between a 7.9 and an 8?

Videogame storylines suck? Wow. I love idiots like this, who bash gaming when it has come a long way, and arguably puts up plenty of competition when compared to the film trite of X3, Spiderman 3, or any other crappy cash in sequel we have to put up with.

While I don't agree with all you said, I have to agree that Gears is not "genius." Then again, neither is R2 or Halo. But you know what they are? FUN. That's what games are about, no? They give you something different in a sea of homogeny as well. They take a solid formula, slap a lot of fun on it, and make everything work well.

Dude, games as a whole are getting easier sadly. I want Hardcore to mean HARDCORE again. That's one reason I love Mega Man 9... it at least challenges both your skills as well as your preconceived notions of how an MM game plays.
Well, one reason I could see is either for the art style or the few graphical glitches. The game does look great though, but I know I don't personally care for the art style.

I'm sorry but both games lack solid characters. They both run off of such cliche action archetypes, but damn does Gears try to shoehorn in "drama" where it just doesn't fit. Leave it alone Epic, you do action amazing, but please, for the love of god, don't try and craft a "love subplot" ever again. Ever.
