It would be foolish for Sony to do any such thing. With the massive investment made in the PS3 as well as the longevity the unit is destined to have I cannot see this being anything more than a knee jerk reaction. The recession has hit a lot of companies hard and the most prudent move would be to restructure to reduce costs and stay the course. IF (I said IF) Sir Howard does do this I can only say that Sony will no longer be a household name in my house. Not only from a game console but t...
First off there is no way to prove that that is a 40GB PS3. Second there are actual disassemblies of commercial 40GB units on the web showing the LACK of the appropriate hardware both the EE and GS. My guess, FAKE.
Actually. The graph shows steady sales for the PS3 and an increase in sales of PS3 software. The redeuced sales were the PS2 and PSP by 1 million hardware units each and it will also show that software sales for both the PS2 and PSP were down. The PS3 is actually posting strong YoY numbers in both hardware and software.
Like no one saw this crap coming. I think I will take a break from N4T* today.

I am sure that MS no matter how much they apply creative accounting to their books are still in the red in their gaming division. A 3 Billion USD loss on the XBox and a 1.15 Billion USD loss on the RRoD fiasco plus initial R&D on the XBox 360, which has not been disclosed to my knowledge, cannot be offset by ONE good year. As for Sony's gaming division a 338 million USD loss isn't too bad considering the appreciation of the Yen accounts for about half of it. Would have been nice to hav...
Not a chance in HELL. MS makes approx. 800 Million USD/yr off of XBox Live Gold subs. You would have to be insane to think that they would kill off that kind of revenue.
Stop posting factual links! That's not allowed here on N4G, especially those that remotely hint at anything negative towards the XBox or Microsofts gaming division!

Gametime AND Foxgod!! I have been surrounded by trolls! Quick someone give me a couple of goats so I can cross this bridge!
are just as much of a hammerhead as the OP. Blu-Ray generates an overall profit for the company. The majority of the losses have been in the electronics division, more specifically TVs. The rest of the big hits have come from the Movie, PC and mobile electronics divisions, Sony Ericsson being one of the bigger losers.
Let's see. Blu-Ray growing twice as fast as DVD and selling more than anyone could have imagined. Blu-Ray now penetrating into the local Chinese markets and a plant will be opened there for greater volume and cost reductions. Europe and NA have been gobbling up Blu-Ray like its' going outta style. Ya.. bad idea they should have gone with HD-DVD.

30 Billion Yen is about 246 million GBP at current rate conversions. Next time troll less and research more. Helps ya know. Oooh and skip the bowl of failios, ok?
EDIT: And approx. 50% of the loss, 15 Billion Yen, in the gaming division has been attributed to the appreciation of the Yen. Which would have brought the loss in the gaming division to approx 123 Million GP or 170 Million USD.
All in all even though the loss was a big hit it wasn't as bad as most think. After taxes the NET operating loss is 1.65 billion USD. Granted that is a huge amount of $$$ but with the restructuring should be offset by end of fiscal year 2009. Also the pounding the yen took really put a hurtin on things. This change accounts for nearly 75 Billion Yen gross loss which is approx. $840 Million USD. All in all not great but recoverable and with the restructuring Sony looks to be going the rig...
Longevity to me matters. I like the fact that Sony has thought ahead and produced a piece of technology that can withstand the test of time like its' siblings the PS1 and PS2. Both those consoles gave me countless years of enjoyment without a stutter or complaint. It's also nice not having to buy a new console every 5 or so years. Not to mention that throughout the cycle of all PS consoles the games have improved to the point of some being unbelievable, I.E. GoW 1&2, SotC, GT4, etc......
All Wii and DS. The PSP is selling strong in Japan. As for the PS3 and 360 there is nothing driving sales on either right now. Star Ocean will boost 360 sales and FF XIII will boost PS3 sales in Japan.
In a previous article here on N4G, http://www.n4g.com/NewsCom-... this is one of the closures I predicted. Don't be surpised if the next cuts come in the mobile electronics divisions and the Vaio divisions. Those will be the two for the full time employee cuts to the tune of about another 5,000 folks. The remaining 9,000 employees will consist mostly of temp./part-time/seasonal employe...
Huxley while it looks interesting has already been done a LONG time ago by none other than SOE. There is this MMOFPS w/ RPG elements still up and running by the name of PlanetSide.

Just thought I would throw that out there.
WHAT!? Huxley, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell have no announcement date in 2009. Let's top that all of with a what the hell is Halo: Chronicles? I know of only two Halo games coming in 2009 those being ODST and Halo Wars. As for the PS3 R&C, Free Realms and Yakuza 3 aren't on the list. We know R&C will be out this year and Free Realms is in Beta right now. Yakuza 3 already has its' limited edition skinned/tattoed PS3 ready to go for bundles. Whatever, I just find it amusing how the a...
