NPD numbers only measure US numbers...And obviously for Jan NPD Numbers, you'll have to wait till mid feb, to see how off VGChartz numbers were.
NPD does not include Walmart numbers appearently (This was said by former analyst who worked for NPD, and a few other retailers. But their numbers do represent a more accurate number than VGCharz.
And Yeah NPD only measures US and Canada. So obviously it's not going to tell us what happening in europe, or japan, etc.
Bladestar,
Finally a good resposne. It's true obviously Square Enix, where it's own games sell the most in Japan, will obviously care that PS3 is selling better than 360 in the market that's most important to them.
And likewise for EA in America, and to a certain extent Europe (For titles like Fifa)...
Which is why, really all terrority are important, for various reasons, not one of these companies wants to be doing bad in any region (Talking about...
Japan numbers are not out yet.
But according to this link:
http://www.vgchartz.com/new...
They figure PS3 sales will be 50 K to 70 K
360 Sales at 8k to 12 K
Wii Sales tp be 175 K to 200 K
PS2 sales to be 20 K to 30K
Etc.
Sony must be thanking those early adpopters for taking the plunge on their system at the "high" price point when it lanuched.
And feel they made the right decision including blu-ray, you may not agree it is needed for games or whatever. But had they went with just a regular DVD player instead.
This move doesn't happen, and more likely than not more movie studios go over to HD-DVD. So PS3 did what they hoped it would do, act as trojan horse. Sure mayb...
I don't think that surprising, PS3 is just more popular in Europe than it is America at this point.
I mean going by VGchartz, although not accurate, The European region has sold more PS3 total since inception (March 07) vs. the total sales in America (Since Nov 06). So it's sold more and faster, not to mention games over there sale better than it does in America. (Assassins Creed, Uncharted, Motorstorm, etc.)
SO I don't find it surprising Europe is proping up PS3...
Basically it looks like this week, the difference between PS3 and 360 will be whatever the sales are in Japan (Which VGChartz is predicting for PS3 sales of 50 K - 70 K and for 360 8K to 12 K.)
So I'd say roughly 40K - 50K Difference between the two.
Also interesting to note, whatever Sales gain 360 makes in US, is neutralized by PS3 sales in Europe. Looks like Japan market between the two is alot more important than some like to give it credit.

It has pretty much all year long in most if not all regions.
I find it interesting industry people at CES feel Universial will likely first to back out and go Blu-Ray over Paramount.
And Retail buyers recommending to it's Retailers to drop HD-DVD.
Most likely when all these companies report their Q4 (Jan to march) reports, so anywhere from March to April. But I'm guessing when NPD make their report at begin of Feb (For sales in Jan), most will get a clear picture of what's happening.
And like you said earlier, I feel sorry for all those people over the holidays, or in the next little while (when big stores get rid of the HD-DVD stock by having fire sales) who don't know any better, getting caught up in this.
To me if this speculation or rumor is true, I think it means Paramount has 2 oppturnity to escape should they choose to.
One that we all know about, that they can escape should Warner go BLu-Ray Exclusive, which won't happen till May 2008 (So that' the earliest I guess Paramount can go blu-ray).
Or Should HD-DVD sales either disc sales or Standalone players start heading south in a big way, then paramount can also opt out then. But again like the rumor says thi...
I just want to see how it works, and how impressive the image is, like there was hype on OLED, till you actually see it in motion, it's just that...tech.
Like I posted in the other article, where stringer talks about talking software companies.
This is going to be about Sony Lanuching or atleast giving some concrete plans for the Video/music download service (Taking on the likes of X-box marketplace and Itunes.
True, but Financial Times is pretty legit site, it's not some blog, and if they are reporting that Paramount is going to use their opt out clause, it does have same weight as well.
Not saying what paramount said in that article you posted is wrong either.
It's sold to reporters...
Anyways were talking about movie studios, and there are alot of reports that from Dec on, Blu-ray set top box (Standalone players not Ps3) outsold HD-DVD stand alone players (Reported by NPD).
Coupled with lets say 800 K to 1 million PS3 sold in around the same time frame, and that paints the picture What movie studios on the other side or thinking of going to other side were facing.
Interesting their adjusting the numbers, I guess they over-reported in some areas, and under in others....
It's also interesting to note that the Wii outsold PS3 by less than the PS3 outsold the 360.
Well the new article is starting Sony is looking to turn a profit on their console startin 09 fiscal which starts in march.
It talked about component prices coming down, I'm sure if and when Msoft lowers the price, Sony will follow.
Personally if Msoft is smart, they wait till Sony lowers it first, and lowers it furhter then them. For example lets say in a month 360 lowers it price 50 dollars across the board, what happens in say april/may, when MGS 4 comes out...
What are you talking about by the end of this year you can get 60 inch OLED for 400 bucks lol...
You can't even buy an 11inch OLED now, for under 2500 bucks.
And Samsung who produced 31inch OLED at CES, said if they were to sell their tv's ie break even right now it's cost over 20 K.
That's an improvement, at E for all, everything was 30 frames a second, so certain sections have been up'd to 60 frames. Hopefully they can up it all to be 60 frames.
When he said 2008 is the year Sony will take on Software companies, it's because they are talking about the Download service Sony is about to lanuch on the PS3 to rival (Microsoft, a software company, and Apple a software company).
You've all heard about Sony want to get it download system right for music, movies, and other content, and they weren't about to rush into it, and they talked about it being ready in 08. I figure you'll hear an announcement at GDC, which is around a ...
They probably won't release LOTR, till more BD players are out there, and more specifically BD Live Capable players (Profile 2.0) so they can take advantage of all technologies available to them.
So far a few companies have announced bd-live capabale players (And PS3 will be getting update to hit that profile).
