I've heard some great things about that great Sonic arcade racer, but never got around to try it out. Now, I'm getting a "want to play" list of kart/arcade-y racers that's spanning two generations!
ModNation, LBP Karts, blur, Mario Kart 8, Sonic All Stars, the list goes on.
This could be one of my fav blogs to have read for this month. I definately like the insight on the Hollywood side provided in the beginning.
I have to wonder if these companies' leaders are sometimes daft enough to see just how long the ridiculous budget, 7-to-8 figures put towards marketing, etc. can actually hold.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
newflesh, that's the username! Can't believe I didn't bother to go look back at a previous review with your input to get that right the first time. lol
Thanks for commenting. Is there honestly anything other than the length of the review you'd like to comment on? Or perhaps on the game being examined?
I'd say it certainly does. In fact, Doom can still be a necessary template for FPS designers (probabaly indie today) that would want to craft a similar experience. The constant demand of movement, the quick loads after death, and more just add up to a fantastically-designed game.
Even when looking at id's recent RAGE, there's also that testament of embodying a unified collection of artists instead of that corporate feeling. Now I think really, really like RAG...
Hope everyone enjoyed the review. Feel free to leave any comments or questions below.
Yes, this is a long review in which many words were used, newsflash. :P
Such a tease. XD
Looks pretty interesting. I'll have to keep an eye on this one. Nice write-up.
And thanks for booting my blog off front page, sassy cat. >:(
Okay, I get that you're referring to soft-censorship now instead of plain criticism. The "criticise its existence" threw me off.
I can agree with the liberal-authoritarianism angle and most of what you're saying. There's definately that worry in a community shouting down someone from the speech/expression they're allowed to make.
The thing to consider is the game is the vehicle used to bring the explicit/implicit message. It s...
Really? That's great. Will have to DL it when I finally get my laptop back from being fixed.
Never had a chance to seen him speak on that. I'm sure he's passionate because the games, whether when they're good or unwhelming, show that. When it comes to his games, my thoughts are a bit mixed:
-Indigo Prophecy: 2nd half can get really bonkers but I still really liked the game since it was my first jump into 'QTE adventure' genre. Basically, what Shenmue is to a lot of other people.

-Heavy Rain: Best QD game I...
"While I agree I would probably find a game which does this distasteful and wouldn't want to buy it, I DO NOT have a right to criticise its existence."
Wait...what? Absolutely, games are free expression, but that right doesn't protect a creator/writer/etc from said experssion being challenged. It's a two-way street. Well...technically, it's an 'infinite-way street' since one's criticism of a creator's work can be criticized and so ...
Yes, I certainly try to keep up with EC. And they do deserve credit for laying claim to the all-encompassing term "engaging" for describing all games.
For originality's sake, I gave more credit to Warren Spector's "Fun is a Four Letter Word" article b/c of the date it was made. I mean...if you look at that one, you can tell any other later-released discussion about this topic harmonizes with that one pretty well; even the examples one could use a...
I gotta admit I like that explanation in the first paragraph. Almost as if the cinematic angle games have is more about the adrenaline high from a close shave than how we often use "fun." Although, depending on the game, I would say it could also be more fun if the theatrics are so over-used that it eventually feels like a parody at times, such as with Call of Duty. I don't know...maybe now I'm trying to pry that word in. :P
In any case, thanks for the r...
Go do it right now! XD
Consider me interested.
Oftentimes, fun is tied with enjoyment, amusement, or light-hearted pleasure. So...eh..it's easy to see the term being more attributable to bounce houses then flavorful dialogue. That's why I mentioned something like "fun in a traditional sense" above.
I anticipated this topic and certain responses having the pitfalls of a "semantics minefield," but I'll try to respond to the other stuff you mentioned:
-I can still not wrap...
For 360 verson, it wasn't that bad with full install (though loading times could get annoying). I thought it was an underrated game too. Liked so many different elements of it, especially those mentioned by Lukas.
The word I'd label for the story is lazy. Bog-standard setup to post-apoc with an extended campaign length that doesn't really have a final act. Even the important adversaries don't pop up until halfway through the game.
It had the oo-op Legends of the Wastelands on there too. I guess I found that more interesting than other gamers, though.
Looks like an actual multiplayer map to me.
