Looks more like a Gish Gallop rather than an "easy-to-digest questionnaire," and it's no surprise to see which kind of people will salute that tactic when it just so happens to work in their favor.

I think the first issue I take from this is how fear/intimidation is somehow tied into a simple question that's inherently benign. As it's been explained in regards to the lore, Nintendo's own design implementation of Link being considered a blank slate (...

Parts of it came off that way, but your conclusion mirrors my reaction to it. Heck, even if this weren't to go through with Ninty, I've been genuinely impressed by the excitement some people have had even at the idea of FemLink becoming an actual thing. It put into perspective the participatory culture that's become sort of a thing with games and the internet. This one being a more positive one too.

It's certainly nice to hav...

Part 2

"Are you now suggesting gender is an artistic design choice as well? "

Looking at game aesthetics/design from a broad perspective, I'd take everything that been drawn, made, etc. as an artistic design choice, whether implicit or explicit. But judging by your lead-in to this question, I'm not 100% sure that's what you were trying to ask.

In regards to your iconic characters/experimentation: wouldn't that make ...

"The lore is the core of the series and of the game. It is the single best reason there is. Striving for continuity that continues to be beloved by millions is not an easy thing to accomplish, yet LoZ continues to do it with every game. Why fix what isn't broken when the only reason is because your hands are fidgeting?"

"Striving" is definitely a key word to consider, especially when it's own lore continues to change from game to game. You're ...

I understand that it could be argued but that it's, again, still a weak one to make, especially when considering that lore or even our own standard definitions of hero don't always cement hero as being male. With that considered, it's still rooted in appeal to tradition; as if continuously being male (so far) serves as some kind of evidence to assume it can't be changed. That was the whole intention of the Green Lantern parallel (which unsurprisingly went in a totally differ...

Regarding the aside: Jamin (PBS Game/Show guy) does wear glasses but just removes the lenses because of the glare. Keeping them on without lenses is just a signature thing some people may do if they've worn them almost their entire life.

Anyways...

In regards to arguing about the icon of Link, appeal to tradition is kind of a weak argument and tougher to work here since we're talking about a reincarnated character rather than a singular one. While a...

"Nintendo is pretty deeply rooted in it's own history, and asking them to change something so common to the story seems like someone trying to push the wrong buttons."

If they're just presenting their take as mildly as this (despite somehow causing the ridiculous hoopla + false equivalences here), which was clearly inspired by the first Zelda Wii U Trailer presented, it doesn't strike me that way.

"The people aski...

"But the stories of Zelda are usually based around Link and his adventures. How is that different than mario in most cases?"

1.) Mario is to some degree a caricature of some masculine archetype whereas Link's always been more androgynous to begin with.

2.) The reincarnation angle of the LoZ series makes it understandable were it to happen. Link, Zelda, Ganon, and the good vs. evil themes are continuously brought ov...

Probably the same reaction many people had when they saw his reveal during last year's E3.

The video actually brings Mario up early on to specify there being a difference between single characters and honorific characters, and arguing that Link falls into the latter category.

"I dont dissagree with you at all, but his point still stands"

Against the user he replied to (christocolus)? No proof was submitted though.

In a broader context of other users? That's more than likely true; however, some often just said that it happened "too soon" rather than hating rereleases altogether; took it on a case-by-case basis.

If you look farther back, you'd probably see that same kind of flip-flopping for people accusing others of flip-flopping.

-A lot of negative responses regarding Tomb Raider Definitive Edition and its quick timing.

-Heat didn't seem nearly as bad when TLOU: Remastered got announced so quickly after its initial release.

As far as it feeling "slimey," that's definitely a loaded term to use (especially since I haven't played the game), but judging from some trailers it struck me as being completely tone-deaf. The supposed first "non-military Battlefield game" showing sweeping shots of police SUV's with mounted machine guns.

Considering how most official review sites, at least our most popular ones here, have some kind of review score template in order communicate what said score means, I think your terribly misusing the term "arbitrary" for most cases.

Don't get me wrong: I can understand your concern, especially when considering how under-served you, as a viewer, have been when it comes to numberless-reviews in games media. But I don't think the solution would still be in get...

"Its a GAME review. Review it as that, a VIDEO GAME."

That means we now should never bother applying any games into a real-world context or different angles outside pure mechanical examinations? Many seemed quiet about this when reviews would praise Bioshock 1's deconstruction of Objectivism.

EDIT: Plus, when looking at the WHOLE review, how much of it actually WAS about gameplay/graphics/sound/etc (i.e. like a typical video game review)?

4113d ago 0 agree1 disagreeView comment

Why not? Applying a wider context regarding the game's subject matter shouldn't have to be considered off-limits.

"How bout we take out cops in all games, like GTA, will that satisfy you?"

Where's that coming from?

4113d ago 0 agree1 disagreeView comment

There's definately a lot of history that comes with that company.

In a wider context, it's also interesting for me, as someone who grew up with games much later, to see a whole spectrum of gamer culture on the internet that have essentially been there since the unofficial beginning*. It's a strange quality that no other medium has a right to say they have.

*Technically, Atari isn't the very beginning but you get the idea.

That's looks like revisionist history considering that some feminist works date back before Marx ever came on the scene.

Sounds like the solution's more in the readers' patience rather than the numerical score.

"Anyhow, I don't think that GDC has morphed into a full-fledged activist group, just that the focus this year is most definitely focused towards one particular issue facing the industry, whereas in the past, there was a plethora of different issues discussed, some of them involving inclusiveness in it's different forms."
