Without these transactions, I don’t think Microsoft would be in the console business.
The issue is settled. The console wars are not a social construct as Phil would like to believe. The war is real and Xbox lost. Microsoft put it in writing and submitted it to the court in the FTC hearing. “Xbox lost the console wars”. All these acquisitions are Microsoft’s way of getting the best terms for an armistice. Nintendo withdrew from the war altogether, and now lives entirely in handheld land.
“when you use it in the game, you’ll see a grid of lasers projected onto objects in the world, which tells you exactly where your shots will land. We haven’t done anything like it before.”
At some point the hype becomes worrying.
I have no problem with a company trying a new product, especially after I was so wrong about the demand for the Nintendo Switch.
It matters because Series S is already struggling with current gen AAA games. Developers and gamers should know what they are up against,
Minecraft player numbers are 2X on PlayStation versus Xbox and 4X on Switch versus Xbox. Another fact brought up in the FTC hearing was that 1/2 of PS5 households also owned a Switch. Point is, a lot of kids play Minecraft and those kids don’t have the power to choose Xbox. Their parents will buy them a Switch. So what choice does Microsoft have except to sell Minecraft where it can?
“million times better”
For $5 a month you can get games like Call of Duty and Alan Wake Remastered on PlayStation or you can get this garbage on Xbox. Just Sayin.’
Like Phil said, the Xbox One generation was the worst generation to lose. Maybe Microsoft should hang up the console business selling software.
From the FTC hearings, about half of PS5 households have a Switch. Probably the same for Xbox households. Nice to see Switch reaching Nintendo DS records, but please, let’s stop comparing handheld sales to home console sales.
Console war winner problems.
29M Game Pass Subscribers paying $10 to $15 per month (until the price hike takes effect) means $290M to $435M per month. That’s enough for a Last of Us or Horizon each and every every month, or at least one of those per quarter as Microsoft plans. If PS+ Extra and Premium grow large enough, we could see day one releases on PlayStation.
Sony, please stop. My backlog can’t take much more of this.
So Xbox is like a self made man who’s parents only bought them their car, their education, and their house.
Business wise, how many consoles does Microsoft have to move in order to make up for lost sales on PS5? Not just that, but the Bethesda brand itself is hurting from this, and its value in moving consoles is further diminished. And by that I mean gamers are spiteful and prone to review bombing.
I’m no fan of internet dogpiling. I also know a dumpster fire when I see one.
Buying a whole industry and watching it burn is a very Microsoft thing to do. Ever hear of Nokia?
Although I hope this statement ends the “Sony is hypocritical” postings here, I disagree with Jim Ryan on this. This may just be litigation strategy. Rather than argue about all these games the judge won’t understand, they are focusing on the big one (CoD) that will move marketshare.
Except $7.5M for ZeniMax and $60B for Activision’s. But then, Phil says this isn’t spending cash but instead a transfer of cash into an asset. 🙄
“Microsoft went with series S to undercut PlayStation on price”
Microsoft went with Series S to undercut itself on price. These console generations really get going when the manufacturers slimmed down, cheaper versions. Microsoft’s plan was to start the console generation with that cheaper version. The problem as I see it is one of longevity. We already have games that run poorly on the Series S and those Series S owners won’t always be stuck with 1080p screens. Dead end t...
