I better get on “The Quarry”.

No thanks. I couldn’t go through the 10 hour tutorial again. This is the most on-rails open world game ever made.

You’ll have a good time with this game for $4. Ms Marvel’s abilities alone are worth the price of admission. All the cosmetic micro-transactions are also free so have fun kitting out the most ridiculous Avengers team.

“If they want to increase PC Gamepass subscribers, they need to” lock more games to PC Game Pass.

Fixed it for you.

The hardware is just a huge loss. Microsoft would definitely want to exit the Xbox business before making new hardware and not after.

Xbox sells enough to stay in business. But you know how these companies work. Why run a business that is merely profitable? They want that sweet monopoly like they gave with Office and Windows, and they see the subscription service and acquisitions as the way to get there.

Even though it looks like most users are paying over $200 per year for Game Pass Ultimate, there a more than a few legacy accounts that paid much less upfront for many years of service to come. Microsoft’s accounting folks might spread that out over time, but realistically, those legacy accounts won’t contribute to monthly revenue until their current subscription term ends. So revenue isn’t a good indication of total subscriber numbers,

Wrong. Console sales really take off mid-cycle with the sub-$300 consoles. Microsoft sees the Series S as their slim model, but I think customers are wising up to that console’s limitations. Right now, the $400 PS5 is the lowest cast barrier to true current gen gaming.

Haters gonna’ hate but the iPhone Pro will sell orders of magnitude more than Nintendo Switch. The iPhone 14 Pro Max alone shipped 26.5 million units between January and June of this year. Apple doesn’t need a large percent of these iPhone Pro owners to play games in order to overpower Nintendo in the handheld console market. Just sayin’.

FF7 Rebirth players and Helldivers players don’t overlap much in a Venn diagram.

Microsoft’s business was built on destroying competition.

“Same great price of $499” probably sounded good 3 years ago. Microsoft really does see the Series S as the replacement for the mid-cycle, cheaper, slim model. Just ridiculous over-confidence from Microsoft.

A next gen launch title or a cross gen launch title. Elder Scrolls 6 would be a waste as a next gen launch title when only maybe a couple million people will have the new console at launch.

Let’s be clear about developers versus studios versus publishers. The developers usually get paid the same whether a game makes money or not. The studio make more of a game is successful. The publisher and the store are is the only parties that directly benefit from games sales. Microsoft wants to be both publisher and store, and if it works, they’ll make up to $17/month per subscriber whether or not their games would have sold well at retail.

“Not bad at all for a new IP.”

Caveats never make a number look stronger. Even so, Starfield is hardly seen as a new IP by the gaming audience. Everyone knows this is Fallout and Skyrim in space. And if you didn’t know, Microsoft’s PR machine made sure you know now.

If review embargoes disappeared, publishers like Microsoft would just do more cherry picking with early access codes. If cherry picking early access codes disappeared, publishers like Microsoft would just flood Metacritic with reviewers for hire. My advice for the gaming community is to follow a group of review sites you trust, i.e. sites that don’t hand out 8/10 to every game.

1006d ago 2 agree7 disagreeView comment

That’s the problem. So called “review sites” start at 5 and go up from there. 8/10 should be beyond good and into the realm of excellence. Review score inflation has been a problem for a long time but has become nakedly obvious with Starfield because of how Microsoft cherry picked sites that received early access to the game.

These kinds of numbers are no surprise to anyone who looks at achievement data. If you compare this Fallout 4 trophy data, you’ll similarly see more than 25% or more players that never reach level 5 or don’t finish the first main mission. Even a crowd pleaser like “Guardians of the Galaxy” will see more than 25% of players fail to complete the first missions.

A $1000 iPhone Pro isn’t going to change mobile gaming. When Apple brings ray tracing to the regular iPhone, then it’ll change mobile gaming forever.

If you ever played around with Neon powers in Infamous Second Son or Infamous First Light, then you know that a game about the Flash would be a guaranteed winner. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. now seems intent on making sure their games have as many live service elements as possible. A single player Flash game just won’t happen in the current development cycle.
