You call stripping out components to make another $100 price cut (within 4 months of the last $100 price cut) moving in the right direction?

This is a pure desperation move by Sony. EA, Sega & Capcom already told Sony they are focusing on Xbox development. Did you forget that Sony had to sell off a profitable part of the company to raise the money for this?

Xbox 360 will be #1 this holiday even with the PS3 price drop. Why? Because the better games are on 360, plain and simple.

Company 1 though 4 supports both formats equally, while Target (which took bribes to support Blu-ray) is stuck in 5th place! I bet they can’t wait until their contract with Sony is up to start selling HD DVD players and more software.

Netflix users are choosing HD DVD 2.4 to 1 over Blu-ray. I don’t know how you Blu-boys can spin that as any kind of positive for Blu-ray.

For 5 weeks HD DVD has been above 40% of all high-def movies sold, so HD DVD has made up significant ground in movie sales as well.

Meanwhile sales are so bad that Sony is forced to do a 2nd price cut within 2 months!

I don't have any inside information, but I have seen a lot of clues that point to an internal Xbox HD DVD SKU coming next spring.

This year, they want to ride the success of Halo and other key titles to win the holiday, but they know in 2008 that high-def movies will become more important. We know that they've been seeking bids from Asia for lower-cost, higher production HD DVD drive manufacturing. Launching the Elite in spring of last year provided a jolt to Xbox sales at a t...

Two $100 price cuts within 4 months and now no backwards compatibility.

The Sony ship is sinking fast!

2 price cuts in under 4 months? Yes, PS3 is a huge failure!

“Every PS3 sold is a nail in HD DVD's coffin.” – Not really. Most PS3 owners are not even buying Blu-ray movies. For the last 5 weeks, HD DVD has closed the software gap from 66%/34% to 60%/40% and HD DVD standalone players are still outselling Blu-ray standalones.

How could a desperate last-ditch attempt by Sony, selling off a profitable division to subsidize a 2nd PS3 price cut in 4 months, ever be considered a good thing?

The numbers say he’s right. Someone who pays $180 to buy an Xbox attachment is defiantly going to buy movies. Most people that buy PS3 are not buying Blu-ray movies. Huge difference.

HD DVD has a 40% market share and PS3 has a 15% market share… which one is dead again?

6813d ago 0 agree0 disagreeView comment

Over 80% of HDTVs out there are 720p/1080i - it makes no sense for over 80% of the market to buy a 1080p high-def player.

PS3DO - love it!

I think even Sony concedes that Xbox will win the US this round. PS3 will do slightly better in the rest of the world.

I mean, Xbox has a 5 million unit lead in the US and it’s still outpacing the PS3 in sales.. even before Halo 3 even hit the shelves. If Sony starts to catch up, MS will simply do another price cut.

What will Sony do if PS3s still don’t sell? What if it’s not the price at all? The best hardcore games are on Xbox 360 and the best casual games are on Wii, maybe there just isn’t enough room for a 3rd this round?

Yeah, trust a statement from Sony on Blu-ray.com - If this was independent company research, then the data would be more believable.

You know why Sony issued this press release? Weekly Blu-ray movie sales in the US have gone from 2 to 1 down to 3 to 2 in the last month. HD DVD is gaining significant ground in US movies sales, and these are based on NPD numbers, not Sony or Toshiba’s.

Actually, I think the answer is the 2 free games (Forza & Marvel Ultimate Alliance) with the pro and elite SKUs, and a new core SKU that includes 5 arcade games, a 256 MB memory card and a wireless controller. I also think we’ll see a price cut or new promotion with the HD DVD drive.

But here’s the thing: Xbox has better games and it’s still cheaper than the new PS3 SKU. It’s Sony that has to be drastic, not Microsoft.

Two $100 price cuts within 4 months… wow… Sony has officially gone into desperation mode.

As the article stated “back in July predicted by a Microsoft employee” so Microsoft has known about this for some time now and I’m sure they’ll have an answer ready.

Here’s my guess:

G4, unhappy with ratings, decided to put on a bunch of crappy shows and pretend they were cool by adding a 2.0 at the end of the name and putting an annoying chat box over 1/3 of the screen. Now, after over a year, their ratings are even worse and they are going back to video game programming.
