I noticed this immediately in my playthrough. I thought it was a subtle storytelling device. I think I gave the game too much credit in that regard. Anyway, it didn't take long to realize that nobody had a reflection. It just seemed weird to me, considering how much detail went into everything else.

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons on the Intellivision got me into gaming.

Well I just picked up a New 3DS today and a few games, so here I come to the rescue, 3DS.

After beating the game I went back and read the reviews from IGN, Gamespot, Giant Bomb, The Escapist, and EGM. All I can say is that absolutely nothing from any of those reviews was wrong. They pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Agreed. I was actually looking forward to The Order because it was a short, linear, single-player experience. I like those types of games. But as much as I appreciate shorter games, I want them to be dense with gameplay, exploration, and a more interactive storytelling experience. I was able to beat The Order in about 6-7 hours and hardly any of that time was spent having fun playing or being engaged by the story or game world.

I think the reviews have been spot on in terms ...

I'm wondering the same thing. Maybe the visuals? In all other respects it felt like a completely by-the-numbers and cookie-cutter TPS to me. I guess replacing gameplay and interactive storytelling with lots of walking around, exposition-filled cutscenes and invasive QTE's is considered ambitious for some.

The mansion level was a highlight. I found that I really liked about half the missions, and pretty much just had to force myself to finish the other half. The nighttime village and the mansion were probably my favorites, though. I wish the whole game could have maintained that level of quality.

Reviews can't kill a game any more than they can make a game a success. I don't think they impact a game's sales by much more than a few thousand units. I mostly just like reading reviews after I've played a game to see how my views compared to the critics. In the case of The Order, I thought the Gamespot review summed up my experience perfectly, although I might have given the game a slightly higher score.

I honestly don't think they can remove the bars on the console version without completely ruining the performance, unless they completely rebuild the game from scratch. Hopefully this is the last we see of idTech 5.

I really enjoyed The Evil Within, for the most part. I just hope the DLC is more reminiscent of some of the earlier chapters in the game (Chapters 3-4 were great), and not some of the more action-oriented final chapters where the game lost the sense of atmosphere.

A short game where half the experience is watching cutscenes, QTE's, or just walking around it a step backwards for gaming; storytelling that consists entirely of long, exposition-filled cutscenes is a step backwards for gaming; a focus on visuals combined with environments that provide almost no interaction or storytelling functionality is a step backwards for gaming; trying to make your game like a movie is a step backwards for gaming, since interactive storytelling has far more potenti...

After playing The Order I can't wait to see what Naughty Dog can get out of the PS4. Ready at Dawn are still pretty rough around the edges, but UC4 should be the polished campaign that I've been craving from a Sony first party on the PS4.

I don't like seeing comments like this. I've been playing on PS systems for a long time, but it doesn't mean I've lowered my standards. The Order was a step backwards for gaming in more ways than one, and I'm concerned if it is the type of game that Sony plans to focus on in the future. I'm all for a sequel, but they need to focus on gameplay and refine their storytelling technique. Let the gameplay tell the story, not clunky exposition.

I agree with this. I thought the super low scores (2-4) were utterly unprofessional, but I think anything between a 5 and 7 is fair for this game depending on what you value more: graphics and production values, or gameplay and storytelling.

Hey man, you accused me of not playing the game in another post, but I couldn't reply. My PSN is TotallyBreakfast if you want to check my trophies. Oh, and you're in denial, bud. It's okay. People used to give me **** for loving Deadly Premonition and it drove me nuts. But hey, at least that game tried something different.

I haven't seen many critiques that seem to come from people who haven't played the game. It's short, the gameplay isn't particularly engaging, there is too much walking around with nothing actually happening, the storytelling is clunky, the characters are bland caricatures, the QTE's are intrusive, and the environments are beautiful, but do nothing to really engage the player or tell a story. It's a beautiful, but shallow, experience. Most of the negative comments seem...

Yeah, everything else was so detailed that when I noticed the lack of a reflection I was like, "No doubt, this guy's a vampire." Definitely don't rush if you want it to last. I spent quite a bit of time just looking around and the visuals, but I still managed to beat it in about 6 hours. Still hoping for a sequel, though, or at least more out of this engine.

Not a fan of the game, but there were more than a few times that I stopped just to appreciate the visuals. Hopefully we see more of this engine moving forward.

Edit: The only gripe I had about the visuals was the lack of the player's reflection in mirrors and windows. It seemed odd to me, considering how good everything else looked. At first I actually thought it might be a story-telling device to indicate the player was a vampire, but apparently not.

It seems apparent that a lot of gamers, and a handful of critics, can't recognize bad game design and poor storytelling when they see it. There's nothing wrong with enjoying The Order. Everyone, myself included, has enjoyed a poorly made movie or game at some point. But the fact remains that underneath the great visuals lies a game that is utterly average, at best. For those of us who appreciate a well told story or a well designed game, The Order left a lot to be desired.
