The only difference is the Core 360 would have longer and/or more frequent load times than the models that have HDD.

I would say it was getting the PS3 version up to par. It isn't uncommon knowledge that most multiplatform games on PS3 are delayed.

Also 3rd parties have been having issues with frame rates on PS3 which is evident in Madden and NCAA '08, Fear..etc..etc.
does give you the option of renting in HD. Because a lot of movies you will only watch once.
Plus this gives you the option to view it and base your own conclusions for a future purchase.
I'm not sure how much it is to rent an HD movie at Blochbuster and the likes of other places. But I would bet that XBOX Live is cheaper. And no need to leave your living room which saves not only time but gas money.(Over $3 a gallon where I live.)

When games are coded they can detect for HDD.
If HDD is detected it will be used for streaming. If HDD is not present streaming will not be used.
All games will always be compatible with core just load times will be slower. Because of no streaming from hard drive.
The only games that would possibly be affected are online only games bc hard drive is neede for XBOX Live.

The system with the highest install base will normally be the lead platform. After PC development of course. All other systems get sloppy seconds.
