The Occulus is shipping with a Xbox controller. The Occulus controllers haven't even been priced yet, looks like they might add another $100. The problem is the platform. All new PC peripheral hardware goes through a long time of buggy drivers. Nobody seems to realize that Occulus is going to be dependent on Windows 10 support.
People are going to start having to learn the specs for VR with some carryover to flat displays, but not one to one.
4K is a flat display term. It is slang for horizontal times vertical pixel resolution. It is also a rectangular aspect ratio, 16:9.
4K VR is 2160 * 1200, but that is 1080 horizontal per eye with a square aspect ratio. The PS VR is 1920 horizontal by 1080 vertical, so each eye is 960 horizontal by 1080 vertical. Refresh rate has also proven to b...
What, Milo isn't working for you all? He is just like a little boy living in my screen, so curious, so cheerful, so uplifting. Wait a second, haven't turned on my Kinect for a couple years. Let me just check in on him...Holy Mother of Mercy!...oh, the humanity, he decayed into a skeleton, rotting beside the pond, with very photo realistic flies and maggots. There is a decaying note he was trying to write, "Peter Fuc...".
These live on-stage demos almost always glitch. It's rare to remember when they go absolutely smooth. With VR, it is difficult to provide a feeling for the experience without actually having the headset on. The Sony commercial with the outline of the headset over the player's face while overlaying what they were seeing was about the best a 2D viewing medium like a monitor or TV can do. These gamezine sites are just being dorks, trying to get click-throughs with the old chicken little ...
I think VR may end up being worse than crack. The same people keep saying, oh, that is just 3D and that was a passing fancy. No, the 3D tv's and 3D movies have relied on Stereoscopic 3D, which is like looking into layers. VR is a HD fixed frame per second for each eyeball. For Rift and Vive, that is a frame refresh 45 times per second per eyeball. For the PS VR, the frame refresh will be 60 per second. The eyeball is analog and has analog type response and recovery rates. 30 frame refresh...
This is what happens when suits move in on video game development. Way too many marketing types keep getting promoted upward, when they usually have no talent or imagination for video games. It would be interesting to find out what happened to cause this rift. It seems like Kojima could just leave and start his own studio like a lot of other devs that have had management disagreements. Konami must have had him on some iron contract for such severe actions being taken. Not sure why the Japanes...
For an open world this size, it is understandable they didn't use 3 million polygon models for every desk, chair, scissors, etc. That is the most noticeable, the amount of stuff there is. Plus anybody that keeps harping about the "grapix" hasn't played the game. It is a satirical art style (it is an alternate timeline world, after all) and if you play long enough, totally sucks you in. To keep calling this the Skyrim engine is to start sounding like a lunkhead. The character...
N4G is an aggregate site, it doesn't produce any original content except for the highly educated, very refined, elite gamer comments :)
There was a business news item a few days ago that Gawker, the parent of Kraptaku, was going to totally reorganize as a political website company.
Remembering how Kraptaku tried to capitalize on their moment a few years ago, it deserves to be shut down. They brought a really ugly side to video gaming that wasn't really there, they were just trying to instigate it all the time. Never followed up on the infamous female reviewer incident but Kraptaku made some huge blunders ...
Really wish EA would stop wrecking the whole Battlefield and Battlefront franchise. We all knew microtransactions would eventually ruin some game franchises. If they started accepting bitcoin or other electronic currency, then you could cash in K/D or salvage or loot for microtransaction perks. Somebody is going to figure out a way to do this securely and that will change things up.
Cherish the days...
The problem isn't how long the game is. The problem is the person that can't arrange their time to play it. I am long past the time where I absolutely need to try to finish the game in one sitting. Usually a couple hours every evening, sometimes several hours into the night. People say a 20 hour game is too short but that ends up being about 5 days for me. The Order 1886 and Until Dawn were really short but they were also more interactive movie games. A long game has to hold my intere...
Sony is trying to launch PS VR with the best and latest OLED screens. Rift and Vive are going with 90Hz refresh rate, the PS VR is 120Hz. All have found 60Hz flickering can induce vertigo. Also, kind of disappointed that the PS VR needs a separate box for processing but the whole idea of wildly flailing arms and dancing around the living room really doesn't work for VR. In these early days of VR, the best way to play will be kicked back on a reclining lazy boy, a vibrating one.
One fact all gamers can agree on this generation:
Xbox is the worst platform for multiplatform games.
Almost without exception so far, and we are only entering the mid stretch of this console lifespan.
Is anybody paying attention to the story in Black Ops? It is seriously effed up. They are interleaving real world people in various real world eras that have some seriously disturbed things going on. Maybe it is because game devs can explore the depths of darkness but if governments and rogue mercenaries are acting like they are in CoD, then it is very troubling.
There is a problem here. A very good runner can run about 1 mile in 4 minutes. If it takes 11 minutes to run across this "map", then it is only 3 miles across. Boston is over 6 miles across. We know it is in the Boston area, and if it is like Fallout 3 at all, will include the countryside around Boston. This area is more like 12 by 14 miles. It could be the game character scale is not realistically proportioned, or the video could have been resampled for faster playback. This is wha...
WTH? Fallout 3 had lots of underground. Did Skyrim have dungeons? Or are those things not considered as being part of the "map"? Oddness prevails.
Everybody saying map, map, map. This is the area around Boston, Mass. just like Fallout 3 "map" was the area around Washington DC and Bethesda Maryland. Having been to those places, before playing Fallout 3, it was amazing how accurate the layout was with the locations of many recognizable monuments, the post apocalyptic versions. MIT and their Fringe lab is in Boston.
The avatars aren't just simple little jpg or png pictures. This goes way back to hacking game saves for exploits. The reason these avatars can be a commodity product is protection. So, Sony is still paranoid about going too far with different little save products providing an unexpected exploit. There is this whole interface transformation, not just PS4, to make dynamic icons as the animated folder of the future. That will open up more unforeseen exploits.
Bromance developing. Notice they are standing in front of surfboards.
