I’d say that yes, generally the term “monopoly” gets misused and misconstrued a bit. I think that is what tripped up OP here. Obviously you can’t say that Apple has a monopoly on cell phones when Epic itself is also suing Google for much the same criticisms.

Apple does dominate the market, but it depends on which market you are referring to. The stats utilized by Epic in the complaint are a bit skewed, but they make it a point to outline revenue sha...

Except for the whole Epic owns Unreal part.

Well businesses want money, that's certainly true.

A bit ironic that 2 of the biggest antitrust suits in history involved phones (AT&T) and Operating Systems (Microsoft), yet people still say something like "Cell phones aren't necessary. They're just useful to have."

Cell phones are utilities at this point. Regardless, even that doesn't predicate being found to be a monopoly.

Go read the complaints and bet...

Which is what is to be determined in the suit. Have mobile devices like the iPhone reached a new level where the free market requires that you be permitted to allow 3rd party apps and yes, monetization methods? Maybe. That's what the court is going to look at.

It is no different than an OS in principle, which is why those old cases are cited. Remember where we came from. But for the free market and the laws protecting it, Windows could do the same thing ios is doing....

While a reduction in the "Apple Tax" may be a strong reason why these suits are filed, remember that relief requested was to open up user access to other app services.

The issue is whether you can force all users to pay via their store. You buy the device, but are you then relegated to only utilize their store? What if want to buy and use a non-Apple piece of software with it.

Does Apple have the right to force everyone into its walled garden a...

So you don't remember how the 5200's complete lack of accessory and game BC with the 2600 was bitched about by everyone, and probably helped kill it so quickly? How the new analog stick on the 5200 was a poorly crafted gimmick?

And including PC in your list is weird. We've all been digging pads, kb/m, and all kinds of other accessories out of the drawer despite improvements to the actual PC hardware.

Which is kind of the whole point being rai...

Why didn't you use your PS1 pads on PS2? I'm not interested in the rest of the debate you guys are having, but I still use PS1 DS on PS2 for BC to this day rather than firing up the PS1.

Fun bit of 20 yo console war talk: The rumors at the time of PS2 was that Sony was pressuring devs to use the L3 and R3 buttons on PS2 just to prevent people from using DS1s more than they did.

Exactly. Just because something is pro consumer, doesn't mean it an alternative is ant-consumer.

It's not releasing this Fall on PS5, that's all we know. Not dancing around any issue because I don't see an issue. You want to say they are intentionally delaying it. Despite having no proof of that, I agree.

So how is that not the exact same thing as all these other timed deals?

Like the examples I gave, this isn't some new phenomenon. PS fans seem to cry about it more than others, but it's all rather hypocritical. You can shift go...

@lodossrage

But that requires you to group people into these brands. That's just odd to me. I'm just bring honest. For example, I started playing GTA games on PC, but I'm not thinking "I built this game on PC". Unless it's a first party franchise, how do you assert a claim on an IP because of prior generations?

Someone could have played Yakuza on Xbox for the first time just recently. Didn't those gamers help build it too? ...

This whole brand loyalty thing intrigues me. I too owned PS consoles for 20+ years, but really don't give a shit about "games the brand built." WTF does that even mean?

Regardless, you guys still aren't acknowledging the difference between timed content and timed games. So I don't know, write a letter about it or something. Pretty sure crying on forums didn't help the dozens of times PS, Xbox, Nintendo, PC, Sega fans did it over the years, but mayb...

Well nobody owns PS5s yet, and it's releasing on PS4, so is any PS gamer really affected? Aside from the ultra loyal brand followers?

But I'm sure plenty of Xbox gamers helped build games that PS has made exclusive. Think of how they felt after supporting bungie for years only to see Destiny get exclusive content on PS4. It happens, and I get the arguments from both "sides."

I'm not a fan of any of it, really. Just pointing out why...

I'd compare it to things like Ghostwire Tokyo, Deathloop, or Project Athia. Those are timed exclusive games. You don't really hear many complaints about those either.

It's still this idea of exclusive content, whether timed or full, that gets people really upset. It's hard to shake that you're being charged the same for less of a game in those scenarios.

If you could then run them on Xbox, I bet they'd jump at the chance at that. Sacrifice the 30% to be able to say: "You can play TLOU on Xbox"? Yeah, they'd do it in a heartbeat.

Just a complete (and coherent) story would please me. After 15 and now 7R, I'm confident in the gameplay mechanics generally. I just don't want to feel like we need a movie, an anime, and a bunch of dlc to get a full story again.

Why sell the the Rtx 2070 when there's a 2080?

Here in a few weeks we'll see the same thing again. Aren't they expecting the 3060, 3070, 3080, and 3090 to all hit between September- November?

There's your answer to your questions.

I'll take that as a concession from you, Rain. You know I have to poke these kids into using their critical thinking skills.

Of course it's speculation. Maybe MS has this big secret plan to delay Halo to some great financial benefit. Or maybe they see the writing on the wall and realize that damaging the brand isn't worth the quick buck.

But the end of the day, I'm looking at them making the right call despite f***ing up the development h...

Again, the reasoning behind the delay is not the issue. Everything we believe, everything we saw, and everything only rumored, can all be true and the delay would still be putting the game's well being over the immediate business goals. They're not mutually exclusive. It's not spin or silver lining to say that. Ignoring that, however, is a different kind of spin. I'm also willing to guess that more than a few here are being hypocritical.
