Well there's some customization, some loot and some leveling, but indeed mostly the RPG part exists of making meaningful decisions in-game and building relationships with the companions. There is plenty of that tho, which makes it a proper rpg in my book. (Especially the first entry)
Because you don't develop your character enough. Openworld-free roaming doesn't make an rpg. Customizing your character both in stats as in game decisions is what makes it an rpg.
RPG=choices
The fact that it has guns instead of wizards doesn't exclude it from being an rpg.
It's not an RPG, it's a tourism simulator.
It's not a list of the best 10 or fifteen, just 5 people chosing their favorite. Nothing wrong with their choices. We can't all enjoy dying as much as the average Dark Souls-lover.
They might be right about a new experience trumping higher resolutions, but all of that is just talk if they can't do anything about the motion sickness problem.
I disagree on the combat but that's because I'm a realtimewithpause-guy, but that's preference.
My biggest gripe right now is that I feel it'd help if they just sped up everything a bit in DOS, from walking to battle animations.
As a backer, and also playing the alpha, you might be overstating that a bit. There are still a lot of little annoyances to be worked out. There's a lot of potential and it's fun to play.
But the alpha isn't better than say a finished, patched and dlc-filled DA Origins, or KOA or even Dungeon Siege.
The writing is pretty brilliant tho.

Do you have an older pc already? How crappy is that pc exactly? Mouse & keyboard? Monitor? Are you willing to use SteamOS or Linux? How about secondhand materials, are you willing to go there?
Skyrim isn't that demanding, so I'm convinced you're budget will suffice.

The main argument why the comparison is always crooked is that you don't need a console when you have a gaming pc, but you still need a pc when you have a console.
Even if I had all the consoles in the world, I'd still need to dish out 400$ on a pc every four or five years.
No sliders, so no fysical customization of your character. Because that is what they needed to take away from the massive criticism of DA2: less customization (sarcasm). It's them little things, they keep my expectations down.

couldn't agree more, it always means someone isn't getting the full game. Either you're an exclusive or you aren't. Anyway, now that I read it's about kinect I hope they let it be and spend time adding customization instead.
