maybe it's the other way round i.e. xbox360 can't do 5gb installs because microsoft wouldn't allow it since they have consoles that don't have hard disks. ps3 do 5gb install because it can, xbox 360 don't do 5gb installs because it can't. ask ANY developer (criterion, farcry, epic etc) whether they prefer to work with a hard disk or not and i am pretty sure you will know what the reply would be.
come on, wouldn't you want to use a hard disk for caching games and taking pressure...
did you know the most frequently failed part in a console (ignoring RROD - which is unique to the 360) is the disk drive laser??? the reason the 5gb game data is transferred onto the hard disk is because it is the most requested content. Add these two facts together and you get the word "longevity" and "little waiting in game".
this is exactly why i moved all my ps2 games onto the hd loader/hd advance system. there is no way in hell a laser drive can match ...
think you will appreciate it when your ps3 warranty ends and the game runs off the hard drive and takes less pressure of the laser. drive lasers are one of the least reliable component of any gaming system. the hard drive on the ps3 is easy to replace and hard drives last for years.

apple have their sights on mobile gaming.. console gaming doesn't interest them yet. the next iphone will have better support for gaming.

i think there is pressure for price cuts but you have to understand that both sony and microsoft don't really want to reduce their margins. both companies are making money from their gaming division for the first time in a while - the last thing the want is to enter a damaging price war. so a price cut might not come unless xbox sales start to significantly drop behind sony.
