Looks like they fixed the janky animation. That's good, cause the earlier previews were awful.
Also good they fixed the boring combat. If game informer hadn't criticized the game so publicly maybe it wouldn't have gotten re-thought.
I totally have to disagree with that. GTA is a good game. But sharp and gorgeous it isn't. It's really good for a PS3 / 360 game. Better by far than say Red Dead, which was like it was covered in vaseline on the PS3.
I've played a lot of GTAV on the PS3 but the jaggies in that game are horrendous. And the framerate is a DOG.
It's SO night and day how good Black Flag in 1080p looks compared to GTAV that there isn't even a comparison. ...
Really, cause I wear glasses and I can easily tell the difference between 900p and 1080. It was plain as day on the Black Flag 1080p patch.
There are screenshots out there on neogaf that show just how obvious it is, on which anyone can see the difference.

Actually the AI companions breaking immersion was kind of the biggest issue. At least to me.

I think that's an unrealistic expectation. New software features take longer to add and test than that. This was a minor stability update and changed a very small thing on the download screen.
I want them to test their firmware updates thoroughly more than I want weekly updates.

As much as I love Black Flag right now. I have to admit 80% of why I love Black Flag is because it's a game about pirates, and the main character is really awesome, not because it's an Assassins Creed game.
I didn't fare as well with Assassins Creed 3 and stopped playing about 25% of the way through. I'm going to give it another shot, but really I don't think it's going to fare much better this time.

Problem is casual games sell. Activision doesn't even pretend Call of Duty is a hardcore game. They came out and said it point blank.

They kind of are. Those were amazing games gameplay wise, but the jaggy upscaled mess of sub 720p resolution may die the horrible death it deserves.
The reason for the embargo is simple. Prevent cancellation of pre-orders. People get excited at a console launch and order things they shouldn't. I almost got Killzone even though I don't like military shooters just because of falling victim to hype.
Neither Forza or Ryse are going to be 10 out of 10 GTA V level games. And even an "8" review is going to take the wind out of pre-order launch madness enough to make some people come back down to reality.
It's designed to fit well in your hands and be a comfortable controller.
If it was shaped like an angular slanted box it would be kind of an uncomfortable controller. And if the PS4 was shaped like a controller needs to be shaped it would be a pretty stupid looking console.

I thought the same thing after I washed out of AC3 after a few hours. But Black Flag is magnitudes better.
Yes at it's heart it's still the same style of gameplay. But the naval combat adds needed breaks. And the story and characters are so great.
Unless you hate pirate themed stuff.
