@adorie: Feel free to ask any questions to the hardware experts on my site either in our forums or in the comments section of articles. For in-depth knowledge about different settings and their impact on graphics technology, just post a topic in the forums and we'll tell you everything you want to know :)

You are unfortunately below recommended requirements and almost below minimum requirements. You might be able to play, but you will have to disable all graphics enhancing options, decrease all settings to minimum, and decrease your resolution.

It is recommended that you upgrade your card; there is no guarantee that this card will play BF3 at an FPS that is tolerable. Feel free to post a comment on my article if you want help selecting a new video card :)

You will have no problem playing on maximum settings. You should play on 1920x1080 or higher resolution if you have compatible (large enough) monitors.

The information was obtained from NVIDIA's Tom Peterson and included in research conducted in benchmarking tests to yield the most accurate ratings. We never said it was equivalent, but it is the flagship of AMD and performs similarly in Battlefield 3.

If you want to do 3D Vision with ultra settings, you will require 2 GTX 580s.

ATi's inclusion in 3D analytical statistics is irrelevant in this case. If you're using some 3rd party product for 3D technology on AMD cards, that's all you - we do not account for 3rd party products in this scenario; the combinations would be overwhelming.

This website is just a huge advertising sham. So many fucking ads.

You can buy a pretty amazing set of components for that amount, and I think we could do it under budget. If you comment on my article (I am out of bubbles on this post, so can't reply again), I'd be more than happy to help you tailor a PC for your budget and needs.

I can also walk you through the build process if you are unsure of how to assemble a PC. It is really easy, and it's a fun project (and very useful to be independent and able to fix your own rig). Let m...

You can purchase 3D Vision gaming equipment (developed and sold by nVidia, Acer, and ASUS - we reviewed it in depth at the link below) for around $400 (monitor + glasses). You're buying a video card for your PC anyway, so might as well go with 3D Vision if that really concerns you. Here's the review:

I can't possibly be the only one who saw the thumbnail of this and thought -- likely due to the resolution quality -- that it was Charlie Sheen.

What many console fanboys do not take into account is the following:

- You need a computer to perform your everyday duties (work, school work, and general web entertainment).
- You probably overpaid for a pre-built, non-gaming system from the local retailer.
- You could pay the same price (~$550 -> $700 for an awesome one) to get a gaming PC, which will handle your everyday tasks -and- your gaming functions.

The simple fact is that PCs are ...

The article above will handle Battlefield 3 comfortably, the 6870 is an excellent card and this is a quad-core machine. Of course, you can also check out our $744 PC build, which uses a Sandy Bridge CPU (smaller architecture and combined graphics, integrated execution cores, PCI-e controllers, and memory functions all on one silicon chip).

If you go to the above article and then click on "$744 hardcore build," you will see the one I am talking about. As we always sa...

It will handle Crysis 2 on Dx11 quite capably. Crysis will effortlessly max out - you need to stay more up-to-date on video hardware :)

It seems like N4G has a very small e-sports presence. Do you know of any aggregate sites that are more focused on e-sports?

I can't wait to see the end result of the shirt challenge :)

While I agree that the glasses can be expensive, the good news is that they have been plummeting in price. They've come down from $200 to $100, and since you'll have to buy a 3d-compatible monitor anyway, most of those come bundled with the glasses.

It takes much more to play than the glasses, of course, but they are certainly coming down in price and being made more available. Free, though? That won't happen other than in combo/bundle deals. It's not like you...

Yes, exactly what I said in my several thousand words :) I agree, and you sum it up nicely: the technology is there, and while it will advance significantly as time progresses, it will come down to games and software vendors to produce games and products that utilize 3D tech.

In the same way that four core processors have been underutilized by games until recently (due to lack of full multithreading support), 3D tech will not be completely embraced until software houses begin...

"3d in general is dumb" is not a strong argument for or against the 3D movement. You should read the article to educate yourself on how the technology works that way you can decide what -exactly- makes it dumb to you.

I commented on the 'eye sore' complaint within my article; I played for periods of 8 hours and experienced no eye pain. If you are competent (and your expert grip on the English language suggests that you are) in configuring your 3D products, y...

Haha, totally understood. The nuke was in Rain's match. I think it was a part of the red stream, though I'm not certain. If you go to MLG's website you can watch the streams as they were played for the crowd.

If you want VODs, I think they charge something like $10 to view the VODs without commercials; you can still view the streams for free, from what I understand.

Hope that helps!

Give me a shout if you need help.

When you build your PC depends on how soon you need it, obviously -- it is my recommendation that, if you can wait, buy the components on Black Friday. You will save significantly on GPUs and motherboards.

It should be noted, though: Black Friday is incremental -- with a $500 budget, you probably won't be saving nearly as much as a $1000-$1500 budget would. Since you are looking to spend $500 total, it is unlikely that yo...

"That PSU seems weird" is not a sufficient reason for ignoring it: 400W will not support all of the components at highest power draw, and unless you get an expensive one, many low-end 400W PSUs run about 75-80% efficiency.

Another CPU is absolutely a good choice, but it will run you an extra $50-$100.
